Is it time to hand the Republic back to the UK with an apology to the Queen?

Rather than continuing to maintain that we are bravely weathering a huge International Economic Storm, caused by the Hurricane Lehman should we not honestly admit that out Ship of State is terminally holed below the waterline, having been run aground by the officers and crew in broad daylight.

The very reason for seeking to manage our own affairs was that we could hope to do better under our own management than under the organisation and control of the UK.

It is clear that in fact we never managed to provide a better life for our people than that they might have enjoyed had we remained in the UK.

While we are not the only EU nation in difficulty, it is a time to discover if EU economic union can work with out EU political union.

When will the generosity of the ECB come to an end

In short is it time to swallow our pride and seek to rejoin the UK?

Just one slight problem here, the UK is every bit as broke as we are. Go visit, the destruction that Thatcher brought appears to be unfixable at this stage. The 'ghettos' or 'sink estates', as they refer to them, are a sight to behold and are growing.

Perhaps if we had the Republic in the first place we might be okay.

Imagine how surprised they would be to discover that large parts of our infrastructure have not been upgraded since they left, and we have managed to take a relatively decent public transport system and wreck it.
We have turned the corner.I commend this Budget to the House. Brian Lenihan, 9 December 2009

My late father, born in the 1920s, was of a similar opinion for many years. Sadly, as an independent country, we have not proved that life for Irish citizens has been improved immeasurably as a result of our leaving the "Empire".
