    Default Galway Belfast Motorway.

Should a motorway be built from Galway to Belfast via Tuam, Carrick On Shannon, Enniskillen and Dungannon linking up with the M1? That would really open up the west.

For 90 bloody years we've been building radial roads from Dublin with all the cack-handed gombeenism and concentration of activity that that entails. Report after bloody report has pointed out how stupid this is in every single decade since the 1950s. Yet we persist in doing it.

If yer gonna spend billions on a modern road network then at least have it on some sort of a grid pattern that ensures as much of the island as possible isn't too far away from transport and telecoms links.

This isn't some sort of mystical voodoo people, it's simple bog-standard bloody obvious common sense, yet it seems utterly beyond the inbred drooling morons that run this country, north and south. Sure the Belfast-Dublin road still isn't motorway standard the whole way, and as for Belfast-Derry....

According to the northern Ireland statistics office, Galway does not count as a city, i.e. a population less than 75,000. And would instead be classed as a large town. Tuam with it's 8,000 population would qualify as a small town. Carrick on Shannon would be considered a village with it's 3,000 inhabitants.

Why connect Galway to Belfast? is there a signifigant amount of journeys by car? keep in mind that Derry to Belfast is not motorway, a signifigant portion of Dublin Belfast is only dual carriageway, there is no dual carriageway at present or planned for Carrick on Shannon because it is a village. In the future Carrick may gat a dual carriageway but only on the Dublin to Sligo route. It is not feasable to connect every small village to every other small village by motorway, the demand simply doesn't exist.

Really? I'd be amazed if there was report advocating what is basically a town of 80,000 people be linked to a small sized city, by motorway. I can't that imagine there's that much travel from the North East of the country to Connaught, certainly not enought to warrant a motorway. Even if there was (which I'd be amazed) there's still Dublin's rail network to complete, which there's ever slightly more demand for.

You, as always, miss the bloody point.

The road network should be designed in such a way that from any point on the island you are not too far from the transport grid. And getting from one urban centre to another should not force a choice between always travelling via Dublin; or travelling on crap minor roads.

The radial-from-Dublin road network is just stupid and it means huge chunks of the country can never be economically developed as they are just too bloody far from viable transport links.

Getting from Galway to Belfast as things stand is a major, major exercise even by car. As yes I have had need to do that journey, many times. Tried it on public transport once, absolute nightmare. For two hubs less than 200 miles apart this is just stupid.

The entire NW quadrant of the island has appallingly bad transportation links. By amazing coincidence the NW quadrant of the island is also poor and underdeveloped with the highest unemployment and the least contribution to the economy.

Honestly, has this entire country been lobotomised or something? The amount of sheer braindead idiocy that splurges forth like a mighty torrent of imbecility, every hour of every day.

you will be lucky to get the potholes filled in the existing road never mind a motorway.
