| As Nate Silver notes in Five Thirty Eight, McCain is up to something... Drudge front page is positioning him for a comeback Bill Kristol is today recommending a radical step... It's all or nothing for this debate, McCain needs to control the news cycle going into it So the options are 1) Fire his campaign 2) Suspend ads & buy a single slot half hour of primetime just like Obama 3) Attack the newly created Republican Racists 4) ... ? This game-changer needs to be done before Wednesday... cYp

| The only option on the list should be: 1) Fix the financial crisis. That is what has McCain behind, not supposed racists, not Sarah Palin, not his age and not any of the other nonsense the MSM have being trying to pin on him.

| Mrmrmrm usually politicians have as much effect on economics as they have on the weather ... and look what happens to World Peace when they try to do that? McCain is outside of the tent on this one, his economics advisers makr Bertie's LSE credentials look good. The irony is that McCain should have the rub on economic issues but economists have deserted him, the type of loon who proposes a "gas tax holiday" won't be listened to. McCain's proposed deficit increase ($5T) is more than double Obama's. Obama may be a leftist redistributionist but at least he is fiscally prudent. I don't see any way McCain can gain credibility on economy. cYp

| Apparently, he's got a new pitch--I'm the underdog. The first genuine thing out of his mouth in weeks, actually: The Early Word: McCain to Deliver Underdog Speech |

| I'm having trouble with your logic here. Hoover lost in a landslide but some people voted for him; therefore McCain will be president. Hmmm. |
| |||
| He would need to win big on the economy and that would require something clever going well beyond the debate. |

| Yes American Conservatives will vote for McCain. However that isn't going to get him a majority. At this stage I think McCain needs something close to a miracle to win and I can't see that happening in this debate. At the very least he will need to hammer Obama.
