Why not?

From the point of view of reducing air-pollution an ultra-high speed rail link to Manchester, and another to Birmingham and London St Pancras (taking say 1, 1.5 and 2 hours respectively) would be excellent. These are now being built across Europe, between Paris, Brussels, etc and are very nice way to travel. These would be quick enough to result in major substition from air to rail.

Its about 330 miles from Dublin to London including sea and using existing road routes (i.e. not as crow flies). So with a high speed link capable of 200 mph you get a time of well under two hours. That would be very competitive with air.

Has Ireland moved out of Europe ?

We already have a land bridge to the UK - it is called the Border with Nprthern Ireland.
A land connection to Britain is just a pipe dream.
Even connecting N.I. to Scotland is not feasable from an engineering stand point.
