Have just finished reading a story in this morning's Star which 'claims' that when Gerry steps down as President of SF and that SF will nominate him as their candidate in a presidential election.
Although all this has been denied by a party spokesperson.

So could he win : Is Ireland ready for its first SF President : and a teaser for all - who would succeed him as SF leader : Marty, Pat, Gerry K, Mary Lou :

he'd get the hiding of his life.

I personally favour Gerry Kelly. The man has balls made of steel.

So does Dessie O Hare. Whats yer point?Kelly has his eyes on Chief Constable on H.M Constabulary, anyway.

You know....that would be a great solution if the conflict was a sectarian battle, and the British were mere peacekeepers acting as honest brokers. But as a Republican I see the causes of conflict in this island as being the British occupation and foreign interference in our affairs. An occupation YOU are now supporting, in the pathetic hope that sometime in the future you may crack some Loyalists skull (which you know well ain't gonna happen) An absolutely pathetic strategy, which in honesty is worse than doing nothing. At least passive resistance is better than collaboration.

Sinn Féin cannot simply nominate Adams to run for president because they want to. They need 20 members of the Óireachtas or four county councils to sign the nomination papers first. At present SF have five members of the Óireachtas (5 TDs / No Senators) and while they may gain at the general election nobody at this stage is expecting them to take 20 seats. They may get 2 or 3 senate seats if they do a deal with other small parties and independents but it's a high hurdle at the moment. There is a chance they could get the four city or county councils but my guess is there would be a big move by the main parties to stop them.

The would then have to win the Presidential election which is a bit of a long shot since their current standing of 5-10% maximum of the vote is a bit off the mark and they're not popular in the transfer stakes. Could be interesting though.

Remember the President is quite a low-power job. Gerry would have to sign a few unpopular pieces of legislation and could only speak on political matters with the assent of the government.

Gerry being elected president? There is more chance of Leitrim winning the all-Ireland. And I am talking in hurling people!
