Is our body politic so debased that the only thing we think he did of risk was not really a risk because he was going back to a big job. He put his entire future on the line by taking the decision to run. He can probably get a decent job based on his credentials, the risk he took both times was to put his money where his mouth is and actually attempt to do something.
+1

I sound like an idealist, but there are more important things than money.

They obviously handled their golden boy very, very badly, though.
I asked this question elsewhere.

How could have been handled better?

Maybe he should have run as an independent nine months ago.

Cool

A dissenter for sure (or maybe querulent would be a better word), but courageous?

In my book, someone who makes a real sacrifice by quitting a well-remunerated job on a point of principle and has to face meaningful financial or career consequences is courageous (assuming he or she is actually right and not just being unreasonable).

On the other hand, it really doesn't take all that much courage to throw a tantrum with your colleagues and employers and stage a series of hissy fits when you know you have a guaranteed and likewise well-paid job to go to, with the price of a good car in your pocket as a parting gift from the employer you were willing to try out for 9 months.

If an ordinary employee in Ireland had the same safety net to fall back on, managers and other supervisory staff would for sure be getting a lot more lip than they currently have to contend with.

He said he wanted to make a difference , that time was short, and that damage was being done to the economy as he was sidelined. He has also said that the cut back in public spending was the wrong policy at this time. It would have been courageous if he had consistently argued against this in the Dail when there was consensus that this was the right thing to do.
If he had done this then indeed he might have achieved something. It might have been at the cost of his party whip, and of a possible future ministerial career, but he was elected to be honest and forthright, and that he was not cannot be laid at the door of his party.

That's all true.

I'd like to agree with Meri here. When I first heard the story I thought Kenny was a dead man walking and said to myself you're hardly let FG near govt. if they can't even handle their golden boy. But as time as gone, all you can say is that George Lee is an egotisitcal spoilt brat.

He seems to have sat in his office expecting people to come to his super duper intelligent brain, regardless of the fact that he was only in the party a wet week, making no proactive steps of his own. When this didn't happen, and his somewhat retarded view of the reality of politics was shattered, he threw his toys out of the pram.

No doubt, this has badly damaged FG, but any objective view (and mine isn't, I actually have a slight dislike for the party) would have to conclude that there was nothing Kenny or FG could have done, Lee is just a egotistical, juvenile fantasist.

Maybe he should never have gone near politics as he clearly isn't cut out for it. He could walked into the Dáil by the hand FFS and he still couldn't hack it. Most people spend about 10 years hard graft getting to where he was. He wasn't even in a clientalistic constituency FFS.
