Armed groups "purporting to be the IRA have no right to hijack its name or mimic its actions", he told a public meeting in Galbally, County Tyrone.
"The IRA took armed struggle as far as it was possible to take it," he said, adding, "all actions have to be judged by how they advance the struggle".
..
Mr Adams said: "Some former activists, including former IRA volunteers, hark back to the 1970s or 1980s - this is not the 1970s or 1980s."

Sounds like firefighting. Rumors of a shift in opinion must not have been exaggerated if Gerry is trying to damage control it.

Pete - that is making a mountain out of a mole hill, whilst people may have some sympathy for the attacks and understand why they happened, very very few republicans feel that it is nothing but counter-productive.

Could be something from nothing but is it not unusual to see the party President making a big deal of it, with media in attendance? This way he can say he was there and tried to preempt events. Hopefully Mr. Crowley will be able to fill in the details on this meeting, believe he is from those parts.

"Violence by dissident republicans cannot bring about Irish unity, Sinn Féin President Gerry Adams has said."

"Armed struggle is a necessary and morally correct form of resistance in the six counties against a government whose presence is rejected by the vast majority of the Irish people".

"There is those who tells us that the British Government will not be removed by armed struggle. As has been said before, the history of Ireland and of British colonial involvement throughout the world tells us that they will not be moved by anything else".

- Gerry Adams, 1986 (1986 Ard Fheis, AP/RN

But it is not legitimate against an agreement made with the overwhelming support of the people of Ireland however you define them.

Pick up a copy of Gerrys 1976 'Peace in Ireland' where hes rationalizing the england campaign on soft targets;

Quote:
They [brit citizens] must decide that responsibility for our long war can be traced to the system of imperial plunder based in England. If they so decide, and if they are true democrats, they must argue for the withdrawal of their soldiers and for the dismantling of the system.
And thats him just getting warmed up on page 12

This is why Gerry has to go, he has too much baggage.

The event did not attract protests from dissident republican groups and questions from the audience were dominated by bread and butter issues including education reform.
At the end of the event, the majority of the audience gave the Sinn Féin delegation, which included agriculture minister Michelle Gildernew and MEP Bairbre De Brún, a standing ovation...
In a message to dissidents, he said: “Militarism, elitism or adventurism is no substitute to strategy, for tactics, for common sense.” He said some dissidents were wedded to the use of violence as a tactic while others were motivated by ego and opportunism, but he said all were wrong.
“Some take exception to remarks by republican leaders and seize on these in an entirely self-serving and negative way ..Others threaten to kill us, or they actually attack our homes or offices... Let me make it clear that Sinn Féin is not going to roll over and surrender our struggle to any of these elements.”

A woman in the audience, who had a child facing transfer from primary school to second level education, said children were being made guinea pigs by Sinn Féin education reform.
But both Mr McGuinness and Sinn Féin MLA, Michelle O’Neill, who said she has a child who is a primary 6 pupil, said “necessary change” would eventually be to the benefit of all children.

Bread and butter issue of education put to the SF leadership and they bat the criticism away like it didn't happen.

Some of us remember PSF terrorising SDLP members' homes and families and daubing paint on John Hume's wall to the effect that he was a sell-out and a traitor.

But PSF are now New SDLP.
