    Senators to propose ban on smoking in cars when children present

    Independent TCD Senator John Crown is proposing a ban on smoking in cars when children are present. Crown, a Irish consultant oncologist says that children are particularly vulnerable to second-hand smoke. Senator Crown's bill (The Public Health (Tobacco) (Amendment) Bill 2012) will be supported by Fianna Fáil Senator Mark Daly and Senator Jillian Van Turnhout.     IBEC's Brendan Butler has told the Oireachtas Subcomittee on the Fiscal Treaty that the organisation will spend "significant funds" advocating a Yes vote in the forthcoming Fiscal Treaty referendum.

    There's something about the #euref Fiscal Treaty (and nothing else) today in Leinster House

    It's just the Fiscal Treaty that's holding sittings today in Leinster House. The committee is holding three sittings where they'll meet representatives for the business and farming industry, civic groups and think tanks, as well as meeting Declan Ganley of Libertas and the Greens' Roderic O'Gorman.     European Commission tells Nessa Childers they'll consider suspending Padraig Flynn's pension after "due process"

    Ireland East MEP Nessa Childers has been of late calling on the European Commissioner Sefcovic to take a case to get Padraig Flynn's pension from the time he was a European Commissioner removed. Childers, who has written to Sefcovic (a number of time) has pointed to rules on integrity by members even after they've left their role.     Government announces plans for awarding of 20-year Lottery licence

    The Government has this morning announced plans for the awarding of the next Lottery licence, which will involve an upfront payment to the state for a much longer licence period after an open competition for bids.

    Standardised unemployment rate at 14.3% as 434,054 sign on in March

    Live Register figures for March, just issued by the Central Statistics Office reveal that there were 3,000 less people unemployed last month compared to February. The CSO says there were 434,054 people signing on the Live Register last month. Full data and information note from the CSO is below the fold.
