• "Opinion, libel and vulgar abuse in new media" a "threat to humanity" says Chairman of Irish Examiner and Sunday Business Post

Nessa Childers organised a conference today on Media Diversity, and one of the most notable contributions was from the Chairman of Thomas Crosbie Media, Alan Crosbie, who said that the internet had the capacity to "destroy civil society". In his speech, which was roundly a defence of the newspaper industry as a quality-control mechanism, painted the internet as lacking in responsibility, and lacking in the same standards of newspapers.

His speech in full is below the fold.

Crosbie also appeared in his speech to roundly call for newspapers to be identified as providing a public service wondering if newspapers could in effect be supported by the license fee and thus avoid going out of business due to the recession and downturn in advertising.

Are you sure that article isn't copyright protected? This might be an elaborate ruse being used to give someone an opportunity to go to the courts and apply to have P.ie shut down!

Here's my question. Is it right that we should relyon something as fickle as advertising revenue tosupport something as important as good information?

Keep your hand out of my pocket Mr. Crosbie. There will be no public subsidy for your paper.

If I am reading him right he is in effect calling for the State to subsidise the Examiner, Times and Indo to prevent total chaos erupting in civil society if they fail, as they will in the present environment! WTF?

He's in the media. He uses hyperbole to make his point seem stronger.

      Nothing new there.

To butcher the words of John Stuart Mill: journalism is the permanent possibility of sensationalism.

There is obviously an agenda being pushed now by the 'establishment' and their whores in the traditional media.

It's a contemptible agenda which should be fought vigorously...

It's all about power and control for the 'establishment'. It's all about money for the traditional media and business.

And it's all dressed up in a nicely wrapped charade feigning concern for copyright and libel and all the other despicable bullsh!t they can think of.

If this agenda gains traction they will all deserve one almighty backlash.

there was a skit in a Matt Groening cartoon about newspapers in the future from a 1960's perspective, the line went "want to know what happened in China yesterday? read our newspaper updated 3 times per day....

Dinosaurs wondering where their dinner is gone is more like it.

      hmmm.

      lets see.

who's been the bigger threat to this country over the last couple of decades.

      the internet.

      or "civil" society which.

. stood over kids being raped by clergymen.

. stood over successive taoiseach trousering massive amounts of unnaccountable money.

. stood over a ponzi scheme that bankrupted the country, actually scratch that aided and abbeted said ponzi scheme.

. stood over medical practioners butchering people and colluding in experimentation of still borne childern with major pharamacutical companies.

. stood over a legal profession stuffed with criminals robbing their client BLIND.

ALL this stuff is discussed on the net.

"civil" society didnt want to TALK about it, not investigate, not demand accountabliity, fecking TALK about it when it mattered.

and they have the cheek to lambast US ?

It may not be the gentile talking shop the print media is but by god at least we have the balls to call a spade a spade when it matters,

and not 10yrs down the road like they do.

If newspapers are so worried about the internet then they can stop publishing them online, and we can see what happens.
