Local elections in Waterford 2009

just looking at waterford east.fg got 2 seats but i wonder if they ran a fourth candidate jacqueline kelly might of got the last seat with another fg candidate behind her.
fg where always going to get 2 seats so maybe it would of been worth a gamble to run 4 for 3 seats.she went out on the last count.

So anyone have any opinion on the interesting developments which may arise from Monday's Mayoral Election.

FF's Gary Wyse has said he's open to joining the pact.

Also, the 4 Independents have made clear they will be all together as one or not involved at all.

FG's Cllr Tom Cunnigham has stated John Halligan is deserving of the mayoralty.

Well IMHO if the most conservative Cllr. has OKed Halligan then the deal is already done.

I expect a FG/Lab/Ind pact.

However replacing Lab with Wise cannot be ruled out but as the existing pact has proven stability I can't see it as a runner.

I agree however that, while I would not (and can't) vote for Halligan, he does deserve a stint with the chain.

I don't think there's any fear of FG + Cha + Roche + Daniels + Wyse anyway.

I think all this talk of how the pact is unfair is rubbish tbh. By the rhetoric of some - by right if FF have a majority in Dáil Éireann then Willie O'Dea should be Taoiseach.

The majority of people in Waterford voted for FG/Lab and the Ind's that were previously part of the pact so therefore if the same pact comes about I don't see how it can be dubbed undemocratic. Majority rules.

15 on the council.
5 mayors and 5 deputy mayors.
let the people decide.
5 candidates that got highest vote are your mayors.
next 5 highest are your deputy mayors.
if they form voting pacts for committee positions ect so be it.

After everything John Halligan has said about the Pact in the past, unfair, undemocratic etc would it not be massively hypocritical of him to join the pact?

With the figures and deals mentioned above, it must be pointed out to the credit of Darcy(and it wouldn't be often I'd credit a FG), that though the rest of his FG colleagues are in the Pact , he has always remained outside this cartel.

my understanding is darcy when first elected was in the pact but they threw him out.

That is exactly what happened, shor didnt he go 2 the media about something an dkick up a fuss about something...

For Halligan to join the pact after what he has said about it in the past would be funny, lets just wait and see

Who knows what might happen. I reckon they will offer him the Mayoralty and the chance to join the pact. It said in the article that all the 4 independents will join the pact (Halligan, Roche, O'Neill, Daniels) or none at all. Take that as you will, but my money is on Halligan to be the new mayor.

Its an absolute disagrace that Davy Walsh who has been on the City Council since 1979 has not been made mayor yet, in fact not even Deputy Mayor.

You may think you knocked Tom Murphy out. But the reality is that Tom did very well considering the what he was up against. He had the FF backlash, Waterford crystal, recession etc. He was fourth highest in 1st preference votes! Personally I think Ballybeg is at the lost. They have no councillor of their own. Regardless what you say Tom was a very hard worker on the ground and always put the community first. If you think about it the size of Ballybeg it should be able to elect both Willie and Tom... Its such a shame that the wp have to engage in dirty tactics.. But I agreed the leaflet did back fire. Willie got 65 transfer votes from Halligan whilst Cha got 89 votes. THat tells a story in itself...

June, the people of Ballybeg chose it to be that way. Its called democracy.
