I have to agree with the general sentiment of the thread,

Cooper well on top, doesn't clutter his show with "lite listening" segments so I can always trust that something I'm interested in will be on.

George second, good when it gets to real issues (due to entertainment value - George is a good devil's advocate) but is filled with too many of those Moncriefesque filler slots.

Drivetime - I have no idea why this is so poor when Morning Ireland and News at one are so blindingly good.

Hookie is the best! He knows enough about everything to pull it off, a very impressive self-educated person of a generation that actually appreciated knowledge for its own sake. I have some time for Cooper's views but he is smug and predictable and his efforts at laddism in his overly long sports slots are laughable. Mary Who?

Thumbs up Hooky!!!

1. George Hook by a country mile. He's a great conversationalist. Not half the fogey he could be (Tubridy take note). I've also seen him doing his show live in the window of M&S on Grafton St. (with Ivan Yates). What a character. Open-minded and tolerant, but not averse to having a go. Love the guy.

2. Mary Wilson is too po-faced and Official Ireland, although I don't dislike her. Too forensic, and not very natural. Once a lawyer, always a lawyer. Lawbiz sure ain't showbiz. RTE have really dropped the ball on this slot (no pun intended, George!).

3. Matt Cooper is a huge disappointment. His manner is far too smart-alecky. He has this smarmy, sneery, teacher's pet way of asking questions. Like, Richard Aldous, his right-wing likes and lefty dislikes are a bit too pronounced. He likes beating up on easy targets, like (so he thinks) the Greens. There are worse out there (e.g. Aldous and Sam Smyth), but that doesn't incline me to tune into his show for anyone but the most interesting guest.

Default fecking ads

Are you guys not driven mad by the frequency of ads on Newstalk?
I know that they have to make a living but that's not my problem.

Today FM/Cooper seem to have fewer - and RTE R1 have the least.

I tried to listen to Wilson once because, like oh, drinking alcohol I figured that was what you did when you got older. But jees the show stinks. Fanning and Cahill ought to be quarenteened in a slot where I don't have to suffer them. If they were I might listen to her, if she was to do a Hook/Cooper type show. Hook has a bit of charachter so I listen to him. Cooper may be more foberous, but the man is totally colourless.

Wilson = The Times

Cooper = The (tablet) Independent

Hook = The Sun

I mix it up but try to avoid serious issues on hook,,,, There's an audience for him but he's often totally out of his depth.

Cooper is the real king... tough, but fair

Matt Cooper top man.

Mary Kenny .. an unmitigated disaster. Dull , predictable questioning. The guests like George Lee makes it worth listening to sometimes. Most of the time it's as bad a Morning Ireland.

Hook... pompous style pretentious accent.
