The recession is far worse in this country than in the US and the UK. UK growth is expected to fall to -2.8% this year, compared to at least -5% in Ireland. You can't make that argument with any credibility. If it were widely believed to be true,
FF wouldn't be 5% behind
FG. It is not true. The reality is that the Irish recession is worse because
FF refused to take the hard decisions in the good times, including public-sector reform e.g. changes in work-practices, performance-related pay, opening the electricity, gas, public-transport etc. markets up to real competition (which would have stemmed inflation and pay demands from the unions), the failure to implementat of the Bacon Report with respect to social and affordable housing, and the failure to reform stamp-duty when it might have made a difference.
