| Finally someone in Irish media questions "celebrity charity campaigner" Adi Roche on the true extent of and legacy of Chernobyl and appropriateness of bringing sick but relatively well off kids here while poor black kids starve to death in Africa. I watched a programme on BBC called "cooking in the Danger zone" where some chef travels to war zones and disaster areas around world cooking local produce etc. He was suprised( finding his innate BBC liberal and probably green views challenged) to find locals had no problem consuming produce from the Chernobyl area and found people actually living in the exclusion zone who never left despite most of their neighbours leaving in the panic (and under central communist orders). The local mayor was filmed out picking mushrooms to eat in a forest near Chernobyl, and despite the mushrooms tested containing 8 times the supposed "safe" levels of radiation the mayor dismissed his concerns and ate them! http://www.timesonline.co.uk/tol/news/w ... 692369.ece http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/programmes/c ... 638351.stm |

| Well done to Sarah for reading up as far as the fourth paragraph of the Digested version of the Chernobyl Forum report. Such a pity she didn't read on to the fifth paragraph: "It is impossible to assess reliably, with any precision, numbers of fatal cancers caused by radiation exposure due to the Chernobyl accident — or indeed the impact of the stress and anxiety induced by the accident and the response to it." And if she'd continued reading, she'd have found out that they're still being irradiated to this day: "The general public has been exposed during the past twenty years after the accident both from external sources (137Cs on soil, etc.) and via intake of radionuclides (mainly, 137Cs) with foods, water and air, see Fig. 2. The average effective doses for the general population of ‘contaminated’ areas accumulated in 1986–2005 were estimated to be between 10 and 30 mSv in various administrative regions of Belarus, Russia and Ukraine. In the areas of strict radiological control, the average dose was around 50 mSv and more. Some residents received up to several hundred mSv." Since the only way that the plight of the Belarussian people and their children can be alleviated from within Belarus would be via regime change that would remove the corrupt and fascist dictator Lukashenko, a European Zimbabwe beloved of Putin, Sarah's idea of 'helping them there' is doomed to failure. I don't understand her motivation for publishing such an article at all, although her opening line, a sneer at Adi Roche's public image, would seem to indicate some sort of personal animus. Perhaps this mouthpiece of the Blueshirts is still rankled by the one-time connection Roche had with Labour? I don't know. It's a begrudging and bitter piece of hackwork that chastises people for their charitable work. Perhaps she thinks people would be better employed in life by spinning bullsh!t for new web search engines instead of helping children.

| Maybe Carey is not completely informed or impartial but the effects of Chernobyl and radiation/nuclear is wildly exxagerated and sensationalised in media. I am just sceptical of the Green version of things and weary of the unquestioning attitude of Roche's friends in media. |

| If she's not informed, she shouldn't be spouting about it in the very media you seem to have issues with, PD. Lukashenko is way more interested in merging Belarus back into a new Soviet state than he is in the welfare of his citizens. I lived in Minsk in 1992 when Belarus was newly independent, and daily passed through the Moskovskaya district en route to work. That was where many families from the region affected by Chernobyl were rehoused. I saw the kids with the deformed thyroids. They and the other slightly less affected kids deserve sympathy and assistance which they will never get from a fascist lunatic like Lukashenko. Roche is doing great work assisting these children, and at personal expense. I believe she is unable to have children herself as a result of the radioactive doses she has received in the zone. It seems to me to be beyond churlish for someone like Carey, who boasts online about jetting back and forth to California to puff a google rival, to lay a boot into those charitable activities that Adi Roche has organised.

I suspect Roche will have more dignity than to respond. I'm surprised at Sarah. I've met her and had respect for her intellect. But this really is a shallow, bitter, begrudging and baffling hatchet job.
