Perfectly reconcilable. She was given a warm frosty reception with the effect that the frost was melted by the heat of the warmth.

What RTE meant is that the nurses had a bonfire ready for Harney, but she managed to escape!

Actually, as anyone who deals with RTE knows, RTE's noses and tongues are so far up the government's collective bums it is a wonder they are able to speak at all.

RTE makes Soviet style Pravda seem restrained in their glorification of the government these days. That report is typical RTE. FF and their colleagues only have to mention the word 'licence fee' and RTE collectively abandons any attempts at impartiality away and inserts its nose and tongue further. When just occasionally a programme is critical of the government, the DG and his colleagues throw themselves collectively at the feet of the minister and beg forgiveness.

The good times are rolling out in Montrose and they are spending like there is no tomorrow. The amount of lifestyle programmes now is incredible. Dermot's pony kids, Not enough Hours, Marry me, Living with Lucy...... etc. Most made by 'outside' production companies because they are required to that. Most of these production companies either shared or owned by an R.T.E lifer

They ARE outside production companies. Numerous companies pitch ideas. And the reason why these lifestyle programmes are all in vogue is that they get big viewerships, which deliver big advertising revenue. Much as though I hate them, they are popular. And at least it means Irish programmes, creating Irish jobs, Irish technicians, Irish broadcasters, Irish sound recordists, etc. I am old enough to remember when on some weeks the only Irish programmes on were

1. The 6.30 and 9.30 news bulletins.
2. 7 Days
3. Feach.
4. Nuacht.
5. The Late Late Show.
6. Halls Pictorial Weekly.
7 The Riordans.
8. Trom agus Eadtrom.

That would be the sum total of Irish made programmes for the full week. And the schedule would be dominated the shows like Kojak, Starsky and Hutch, and Ironside.

At least these days most the schedule most days is actually home produced.

(And damn it. Now that I mentioned Ironside its damn theme music is now going around in my head, along with those annoyingly cartoony captions of Raymond Burr getting shot and ending up as the police chief in a wheelchair - hence the name of the show! Good job I didn't mention D*LL*S!)

Have noticed the variance of some "adverbs" in the title or heading of quite a few of the news stories between RTE and other sources..
generally all stories that reflect on Government or particular ministers also..
(biting the hand that feeds etc.. Paddy Chomsky where are ye lad?)

NDS your leaving out the highlight of the week hosted by Martin Dillon, Mart & Market (thats before the Dow the FTSE and the ISEQ became the markets to watch of course... it was all heifers in ballinasloe )

Oh gawd. How could I forget old baldy himself, with all the heifer prices!!!

And I also forgot Garda Patrol, with gardai in their old woolen uniforms reporting stolen 'veh-ek-els' being stolen, and questions about the latest Morris Minor that went missing outside a church in Termonfeckin!

(Now that brings back memories - having to wind up your car win a handle you inserted in a hole, to start it up. And the gales that would blow through the back seat as I lay there as a kid, nodding off while returning from visiting my grandparents, with my parents saying the rosary! And Mary Hopkins on the big old transisitor radio singing "Those were the days . . . "

Now I am feeling old!!!)

One that always amuses me is how a government minister "states" or "says". Someone from the opposition "alleges" or "claims".

The 1990s must have been tough in the country. I found a few valve radios while moving books and stuff. Surprisingly, one of them still worked.

Though the Hall's Pictorial Weekly ripoff of 'Garda Patrol' was brilliant. I still can't understand why some RTE type thought that banging on an old oil drum was cutting edge music. Then I remember RTE "comedy" and the damage that communist 'Lolek And Bolek 'crap promoted by Harris and his friends did to all those impressionable minds.

AAAGH. You just reminded me of all those dreadful European cartoons of Lolek and Bolek type RTE used to show. uuuuuugh. *shiver* All we wanted to see was Tom and Jerry and instead we got French existentialist line drawings, talking sheep from Czechlovakia and images of Soviet factory workers! *Another shiver"

And all that bangedy bang music of Garda Patrol.

And of course Charles Mitchell (whose grave I accidentally stood on when visiting a cemetery lately. Sorry Charles!) And of course Deirdre Purcell and Anne Doyle reading the news!

And then we had Minnie and Batty Brennan, Father Sheehy, and then Gabriel Byrne having an affair with Benjy's wife! (The rotter!)
