Are you a dvd or blue ray disc owner or both?

Reason i ask

IDG News Service) -- The decision by Warner Bros. to drop HD DVD in favor of Blu-ray Disc for high-definition movies has set the electronics industry abuzz. Announced on the eve of the Consumer Electronics Show (CES), the move put a single question in the minds of thousands of industry insiders heading to the event in Las Vegas: Could the high-definition format war be over?

I have read on sites theres talk of dvds becoming obselite in a few months time

Sony is the maker of blue ray disc

But question i ask is there any rules in EU law on a company creating a monopoly?

The defintion of monopoly

. exclusive control of a commodity or service in a particular market, or a control that makes possible the manipulation of prices. Compare duopoly, oligopoly.
2. an exclusive privilege to carry on a business, traffic, or service, granted by a government.
3. the exclusive possession or control of something.
4. something that is the subject of such control, as a commodity or service.
5. a company or group that has such control.
6. the market condition that exists when there is only one seller.
7. (initial capital letter) a board game in which a player attempts to gain a monopoly of real estate by advancing around the board and purchasing property, acquiring capital by collecting rent from other players whose pieces land on that property

6 the market condition that exists when there is only one seller

Is there any EU law on 6 the market condition that exists when there is only one seller?I thought under free market rules that cannnot exist

As i far as know there are laws in the Usa on this

There are three major federal antitrust laws: the Sherman Antitrust Act, the Clayton Act and the Federal Trade Commission Act.

The Sherman Act: Contracts and Monopolies

Quote:
Monopoly and the attempts to monopolize any part of interstate commerce or foreign commerce are illegal according to the Sherman Act. The law makes it clear and has the means to break up monopolies and to stop others from becoming monopolies. Monopoly cases require proof that there has been an attempt to destroy their competition or gain monopoly power. These cases tend to be very hard to prove and that is why there are not very many of these cases

Im sure there lot of people In Ireland and elsewhere who bought dvd players for sale over christmas Now in a few months we mightnt be able to get all films we would like to see on dvd

are there any laws in place like the sherman act Under EU law to prevent a company creating a monopoly?

Lol, well I was accidently ahead of the curve on that one, our household opting for VHS for no particular reason. But I was a hold out against DVDs for a long time. Waited for 2 years bofore upgrading to XP and wish I had the same option with a Vista laptop I have just bought!

It's an interesting question regarding a possible monopoly but it shouldn't be that big of a problem. Sony will own the patent to the BluRay technology but these patents will expire eventually. Also it's not as if Sony will have a monopoly on the manufacture of all players and media (as might have been the case in the BetaMax days).

When you say DVD's being obsolete in a few month's do you mean ordinary DVD's or HD-DVD's?

Both formats will be obsolete soon as people will soon be downloading all their movies and games directly from the internet and storing them on hard drives.

(sooner for people who live in countries with a decent internet infrastructure)

I wouldn't hold your breath for that. I'd give it 3-5 years for it to be a common-place thing similar in sive to iTunes is currently.
