Default Lisbon is a proxy vote on Turkish accession - vote NO

Don’t be a Turkey - Vote no to Lisbon

The EU Commission programme for 2008 includes talks with a whole range of countries East of Europe about joining the EU.
Though currently stalled slightly, the EU is talking to Turkey about accession.
A high percentage of 70 million Turks could be - to use a phrase of Dick Roche - sitting on their suitcases, waiting to come to Ireland
Given that Minister of State Conor Lenihan believes that EU citizens resident here on a long term basis who can speak English should be given the vote in Dail elections.
After Lisbon, the Ever Closer union is also an Ever Expanding Union,
taking in more and more countries-. Lisbon hands over national control on immigration.
My vision of the EU does not included Turkey.
It is a country with an appalling human rights record.
It is still in denial about the genocide in Armenia. They currently mistreat the Kurds as well as its Christian minority.
They have failed to assimilate in Germany, there is not reason to believe they would do it here.
We need a legally binding assurance in advance of Lisbon vote that Turkey will not be admitted to the EU.
We need to define the limits of eastward expansion of the EU BEFORE the Treaty of Lisbon is passed
Lisbon fails to do that.

Therefore:

FF and FG are in favour of Turkish accession. ie both this government and any forseeable one.

Only 29% are in favour of Turkish accession.

So, even if Irish govt holds a veto over Turkish accession, it will not use it.

Therefore, only practical way for Irish people to slow down or show opposition to Turkish accession is to do what French people did:

Vote NO to Lisbon , NO to Turkish accession

Don't vote for another Turkey - vote No to Lisbon.

Why do you think both bigger parties have failed to tell their supporters about their support for Turkish entry recently?

Any guesses?

Turkey can still join the EU, if Lisbon doesn't pass though.

Because it's utterly irrelevant to the Lisbon Treaty?

Actually, if there was any reason why I'd vote no, this is it.
Turkey in the EU will cause serious social problems.

Still, there's a lot of anti-Turkish-membership in the Parliament (EU), so it's not big enough to sway my Yes so far.

Ah ******************** it Pidge if the YES side are going to base the last days' arguments on things "utterly irrelevant to the Lisbon Treaty" then you cant complain

Not another No red herring. The treaty changes nothing about Turkish accession. Any more lies you guys can think up while you are at it?

It removes the member limit from Nice.
Not exactly a proxy for Turkish membership, but definitely favourable towards that end.

Still, as I've said, there's plenty of valid reasons to reject them.

A 'YES' or 'NO' vote will not be a ticket for Turkish membership.

The vast majority of the 25 member countries are against Turkish membership of the EU.....and seeing the times we're living in, I think it'll stay that way.
