This is a discussion on Laois local elections 2009 within the Leinster forums, part of the Regional Discussion category on Politics.ie. I hear the Shinners are about to announce another candidate to contest in the Portlaoise area...

In relation to Jack Nolan mentioned on the other Laois thread, i cant see him loosing his town council seat, despite the FF tag. He is perceived to do some work and will probably increase a little on last time. If Moloney runs he will probably take votes in the council area that Nolan would of got. Phelan will hurt him a little to. Probably eight of the present 9 town councillors will be returned. Rotimis seat is certainly for the taking. This might well go to the team that manages there vote best, and you can never rule out FF for this.Sinn Fein and FG will also have interesting vote management strategies from what I hear. Whatever way you look at it its up for grabs by the smartest operator and we will def have a a few of those in the race. On another point, all this pofile building was leading me to think John Whelan might of been thinking of a council seat! He is on the dole after all! ( maybe this was just a dream ) The again if he was thinking of it ,addmiting on national TV that he was a card carrying member of the Cowen fan club would not of been to smart. Still, at least he would get one number one.... from Margret Ryan.

Plenty of debate in the Mountmellick area FG are not flavour of the month because Paddy Buggy was not nominated despite having a pretty good election last time, FG s selection might still have a few twists yet. !!!!!!!!!!! All is not well in Portlaoise either where they cant seen to get a team together. In FF the nominations were handed down from head office in other words John Moloney decided who was going to run, this meant dropping his brother Michael off the ticket, and also to M Gormleys disappointment, this too may have a few twists left. Only the Borris in ossory area seems to be orgainsed by all parties. Looks like being a long run in. Last edited by feet first; 24th January 2009 at 12:44 PM.

What is taking FG so long to complete their line up in Portlaoise.? That seventh seat is there for the taking if they get their act together. Aird, Sweeney and O'Brien will def on the ticket - will they have a fourth candidate? O'Brien is a nice woman but I would have concerns over whether she could take that last seat. Did I read here that Matthew Keegan was running (local undertaker)
