Madoff's attorney argues for lenient 12-year term - The Irish Times - Wed, Jun 24, 2009

has anyone, in the history of this state, had to plead for 12 year "leniency" for a white collar crime?

my recollection, of irish white collar crime sentencing, is of smirking gombeens getting sentenced for a few days to a cheering gallery, walking out of the court like a the rebellous schoolboy sent to the wall, and walking straight back into "polite society" when those days are up.

There is no such thing as white-collar crime in Ireland. If there was, then people would be charged with it, appear in court and, possibly, be sentenced to a jail term. Since that clearly doesn't happen, why are we talking about it at all outside of a US context, a jurisdiction where the law is actually enforced?
