It is about the Gardai - they have decided to march on Wednesday (well, GRÁ has) so I want to comment on that proposed march.

So what happens if all the protests work and no one pays a levy? It's simplistic to say "They caused the problems let them pay the cost" - fine in theory but totally impossible in reality.

Regardless of who or what caused it, if it's not fixed, it can only get worse.

Your argument is the same as saying - The robbers broke the window in the corner shop, let them fix it!

P.S: With regard to me joining "the force" (good word that), I'm afraid I wouldn't be able for the mind-games in Templemore. I congratulate those few who came through it unscathed.

Unfortunately Unicorn you are a little late. The Gardai marched on Wednesday...a couple of weeks ago.

Of course it is all about Gardai, that is what this thread is about, The Gardai marching in unison with all others for a common cause.

Of course the robber should fix the window. The robbers in this situation have been caught, let them repair what they have done.

Other civil servants should disassociate themselves from this group to retain their own credibility

Just saw on the television last night that they marched in the Paddys day parade in New York.

The Nurses have declared that they are aware that lump sums will not be interfered with for the lower ranks at least.

As the Gardai and the Nurses are linked this should be good news for the Gardai.

The bad news is that the government has announced that all promotion within the gardai will be a political appointment from the rank of garda up.

Another step towards total control coupled with a similar announcement for the Army.

Serious. We need to wake up and pretty soon.

Will we see the Gardai marching anymore now that all promotions will be by political appointment following the most recent move towards a police state by the government.

This move will test the resolution of the rank and file Gardai and the GRA.

Following the Gardai's march the government has apparently come down hard on them.
Templemore to be closed for an indefinite period-at least two years.

Instructors and their families to be dispersed around the country without consideration for their social or educational needs.

No recruitment for at least two years placing a much heavier work burden on individual Gardai.

No promotion and where necessary only at the whim of the Minister so effectively Garda Rank promotions are now political appointments.

Is this a modern day Macushla reaction.

Will PJ Stone and his cohorts have the bravery and the guile and the resilience of Jack Marrinan and his group at Macushla and after?

This will test him out. It should be interesting.

a number of young Gardai rebelled against stifling bureaucracy and authoritarianism in what was later to become known as the "Macushla Revolt", an event which was to change the course of the Garda for good.

The young Gardai had been refused a pay award given to their older colleagues and in frustration met in the Macushla Ballroom in Dublin in direct contravention of the Commissioner's orders. At the time, a number of young Gardai were so disillusioned that they were prepared to leave the Force and pursue an alternate career. Apparently it was the opinion of some of those disillusioned officers to "have a meeting, cause havoc and then leave", as they had made other plans already. The fact of the matter is that they stayed on, such was the success of the protest and many later held senior posts in the representative bodies that were to come. A few hundred Gardai attended the meeting and as they entered Inspectors from every division noted the names of anyone they could recognise...........

The Macushla Revolt was a product of latent resentment within an authoritarian, hierarchical organisation. The pay Issue ignited this discontent in the Force............

A large meeting was called for Saturday, November 4th, at the Macushla Ballroom, Amiens Street, Dublin. During the build up to the meeting, dire warnings were given to any Gardai thinking of attending. In any event the meeting took place, members' names were taken, and this later resulted in 160 members receiving charge notifications for discreditable conduct......


....The Guards' Body was directed by a young Co Clare guard, Jack Marrinan, who as full-time General Secretary began to apply skilful and professional trade union tactics to the Guards' claim for improved pay and conditions.
