Therefore, if you are 17 when you begin a sexual relationship, you are breaking no law.

There is currently a recommendation being considered by Government, to change the age of consent with "a person in authority" (which would include teachers), to 18 years of age. However, that is not in law, and the 17 year age of consent applies.

As for "how he may come onto you", this is a political website, and not the proper forum for considering such matters.

However, if you currently feel his behaviour in class is inappropriate, then you should report this to your parents, and the school principal.

I understand the govt is planning changes which, while reducing the age of consent to 16, will continue to criminalise sex between adults and those under 18 if the adult is responsible for them in positions of responsibility, e.g. teachers, swimming-coaches etc. So even if you're 17 it will be illegal once this legislation is passed and the maximum punishment for the teacher would be life-imprisonment. 18 is another matter entirely.

That's a ridiculous policy. And wholly disproportionate!! Life imprisonment? Are you having us on? The teacher would be doing nothing wrong sexually. Just professionally/conflict of interest. So disciplinary hearings would be in order perhaps but nothing legal. I would have a liberal attitude to these things and would be inclined to want the teacher redeployed in this situation. Alternatively the pupil would have to have a different teacher for the subjects taught by the particular teacher. Yet this is far from a rigid response. It depends on the person. Some people would have no problem pursuing their duties in the classroom, others would be different. Similarly for the student. But no way do I support draconian and pointless jail sentences etc.

I agree it seems draconian to send someone to life-imprisonment if there is a consensual relationship with a 17 year old but I suppose the framers of the proposals have in mind protecting children from predators who would abuse their positions of authority to pressure someone under them into sex. There is also the question of a party to such a relationship getting unduly favourable treatment e.g. exam-marks and that is obviously wrong. So there has to be some kind of punishment.

that's only the maximum sentence - its unlikely anyone would ever get a life sentence, let alone serve life, for such a crime.

Rape also carries life as a maximum sentence.

The teacher should be sacked immediately and the Teaching Council should bar him from Teaching in this state. It's totally unethical, unprofessional and immoral

Em, because a student thinks he might have a crush on him? If the teacher actually tried to do anything of course that should happen, but it's just a tad ott to do that based on an unsubstantiated worry. Just because the teacher is gay doesn't automatically mean that the teacher will hit on the student
