Default Drumm: "treating less people in hospitals does not equate to cutbacks in services"

The head of the HSE says treating less people in hospitals does not equate to cutbacks in services. Brendan Drumm’s appearing before an Oireachtas committee to discuss the HSE’s service plan for 2010 – with cuts of €660 million in funding.
"Given the worry and inconvenience hospitalisation can create for patients and their families, we need to continue to lower admission rates."
Hospital admissions need to be lowered, says HSE | Newstalk - Ireland's National Independent Talk Radio Broadcaster

A comment worthy of John Gormley. Black is white etc.

Wrong - he was talking about moving medical treatment out into the community. Many GP surgeries are now equipped to handle stuff that previously required short-stay hospitalisation.

There are a handful of such centres in the country.

"Care in the community" is waffle.

No Horse, to be fair he is talking about cutting down rates of admission for those who actually either,

1. Do not actually need to be admitted at all (twats drunk off respective faces, for instance)

or

2. Treatment could be provided in the community, be it by your GP or in a local or regional day clinic.

Saying that, I cannot see those levels of savings being accrued.

As the Director of the CMH said many years ago when this phrase 'care in the community' was first coined, the community doesn't care.

Sack every second manager. Then repeat the dose.

How many private hospitals would have been built without tax breaks

Drumm is right.

People are better off if they dont enter hospital.
Day cases are becoming much more common.
Cheap hotels can also accomodate patients overnight who dont need full medical care.
So for once more can be done with less.
Needs the working day to be extended to be successful.
