Well ladies if you seriously think Paul Gogarty would use my name then you both must be mad!
Have a look on the Party website, you will even see what I look like!

It's a pity that so many people in politics are afraid to say who they are when expressing their views on this forum, cowardly behaviour me thinks, I suppose only Real Men (and women) are brave enough to reveal their real identity on this forum!!

Are you a failed politician? or a failing politician??

I am stunned that people would make jokes about someone who appears to be suffering a mental illness. It is not funny. It is not something to laugh over, no matter who the inflicted person happens to be. That in this case the man happens to be a T.D. makes no difference. He should be given the chance to realise that something is very wrong with him. Sometimes people will think they are fine, and its only when they get well again do they realise their behaviour was bizarre.

Some compassion is needed. Ireland has far too many suicides, far too many people suffering from various types of mental illnesses. To actually print articles about Gogarty's behaviour when it is obvious he is typical of people going through a mental breakdown is in my opinion sick. God help his poor wife and family, and give them the strength to deal promptly with whatever means are at hand to ensure his safety.

I thought it was just sarcasm, saying a TD is mad is quite common, I don't think most people would make fun of a real medical condition

Default Is Paul Gogarty actually mad?

wombat's post is sensible and humane, and perhaps this thread has gone far enough. It was "given legs" by the Miram Lord item, which I suspect was inspired by an FG source. I was at the public meeting in Rathcoole. Two people spoke very briefly, from the floor, before Senator Fitzgerald, viz. Joanna Tuffy T.D. and Cllr Robert Dowds, who expressed their opposition to the proposed incinerator, and made no party political points. Ms Fitzgearld went to the front of the meeting, spoke at length and made several critical comments on the Green Party and Minister Gormley. When she finished, a member of the RAID group on the platform reprimanded her mildly for bringing in party politics. Towards the end of her speech, Paul Gogarty got off his chair, got on his knees with a bit of a thud, held back his arms in a gesture which I took to mean "give us a break". When he did so his chair made a bit of a noise. Paul then went to the microphone, briefly expressed his and his Party's opposition to the incinerator, made no party political cooments and returned to his chair. That was it, nothing more. At the previous public meeting in Rathcoole, Cllr Ridge also criticized the Green Party, for which she was also mildly reprimanded by the person chairing the meeting. The reprimand met with applause from those in attendance. For some months now there has been ongoing and increasing antipathy between FG and Green Party politicians in Dublin Mid-West. It's getting tiresome.

What was the insinuation by Hayes to Gogarty having a double life? Hayes is an arrogant and nasty piece of work.

This is one of the oldest tricks in the book. Make it look as if you are standing up for someone, but get the dig in when you have aroused the sympathy of the reader. For the original example read Shakespeare's Julius Caesar: "I come not to praise Caesar, but to bury him".

Methinks dear Twilight you are mistaking the average decent, law-abiding member of society and P.ie reader as a Pleb. Just remember that implying somebody is mentally ill, even under a supposed sympathetic veil, could lead said Plebs to shun and avoid the alleged mentally ill individual.

And, given that the facts of the meeting have been documented above by somebody who was at the meeting, then should Paul Gogarty be found upon medical examination not to be mentally ill, your comments would then be grossly defamatory, irrespective of where this site is hosted.

My advice, as someone who has studied the laws of libel, would be to withdraw your allegations. Unless of course you have medical evidence to back it up.

Finally, I do agree with you that Ireland has too many suicides. So let's not demean the issue by sneakily inferring someone is mentally ill. There are some other individuals who at least had the balls not to beat about the bush.
