Left Wing / Right Wing / Centre

What is the difference between Left Wing, Right Wing and centre politics? What parties are left wing and why? How did they get these titles? Can somebody suggest a good source for learning the basics of Irish politics?

Workers party are the farthest to the laft followed by the Socialist party then Sinn Fein while Labour are just left of centre. Fianna Fail claim to central but are really to the right more so than Fine Gael who were traditionally the right of centre.
PDs were right and libertas would be far right.

Thanks Henlars, but what does this mean with regard to their policies?

TimBuckII is correct. Quite simply, the radicals of the time were seated on the left of the parliament.

The PDs and Libertas leaned further to the right than a man who'd just had his right leg chopped off.

Was The Head of Fianna FAIL, a Mr B. Ahern not a Left wing Socialist??

I would have thought Hitler and Stalin were one of the same but on thepoliticalcompass.org they're on opposite sides of the divide.

The closer to communism you are the more left wing you are. The closer to the PD's you are the futher right wing you are considered.

The modern Right tend to be more individually focussed and reformist. The Left pander to collectivism and are reactionary.

Of course, if they could be summed up in a couple of words, Left and Right probably would not have come into existence.
