The vote for 16 year olds?

Although I agree most teenagers are apathetic towards politics, should the acts of the majority suppress the minority? I am friends with quite a few teenagers who are very interested in politics. Most of our european counterparts treat teenagers as young as 16 as adults, why not us, the Irish?

(I am 17 by the way)

Mmmmm make things more fun, not sure if civics is a mandatory topic in schools ... if not make it so for say 14/15 year olds. Iff they past an optional, reasonably strong, politics exam , not just fact based either expect to see some theory & critical thinking, then they get the vote.

Make things competitive & get folks engaged.

I did Civics Social and Political Education up until the Junior Cert and it was dire. Also had a reputation as being impossible to fail. I definitely think there should be some sort of political education up to Leaving Cert level

Quite a bit on this here already.
We've all heard that a million monkeys banging on a million typewriters will eventually reproduce the entire works of Shakespeare. Now, thanks to the internet, we know this is not true.

Being apathetic towads politics is not a reason to disallow people to vote. Many people are apathetic because they feel alienated from the political establishment or they see no real purpose in voting as politicians are all the same and obviously to a degree this is correct certainly among the main parties in Ireland.

I agree 16 year olds should have the vote. Peopel get politicised at all ages I would have considered my self "political" from the age of 12/13 -

And before that, it was discussed here.

No way. I accept that 16 year olds pay tax and the argument is that they should also be able to vote because of this.

The solution to me is for them not to pay tax until they are 18 and similarly increase the age for driving to 18.

Some socialists argue that they are mature enough. This to me is pervish. I know when I was 16, although I had an interest in politics, I was not mature enough to vote neverminding the majority of my peers who had no interest.

Most of them would vote for far-right or far-left wing parties anyway.
