Are Ográ Fhianna Fáil against free education?

Just a rumour I heard that I am wondering is there any truth behind. Did OFF say they were against free education, as in they supported O'Keefe's idea to re-introduce 3rd level fees?

I don't know and, as it's OFF, I don't care. But it might be important to point out that it's not a case of free education for/against. It's free education for some/fees for others.

My own cumann has shot down the ideas completely. However there were only 2 votes in the difference.

I personally am in favour of a those who can pay, will pay system.

They will take up a bilocatory position, being both for and against it, in much the same way as the Senior Hurlers did. Like you had Batt O'Keefe and Mary Hanafin speaking out of different corners of the same mouth.

I think both OFF and YFG will be split internally on the issue to be honest....

I genuinely think it's neccessary to be open-minded about it myself....If there's a well thought out system and reasonable ceilings implemented I see no reason not to.

Bear in mind when it comes to limits these are people who have ten years with the grant limits the way they are.

Gives a good indication of where things will go.

Well if the ceiling even remained within a shout of today's ceilings I'd chain myself to the gates of Dáil Eireann!

I have gone from being totally against the re-introduction of fees to favoring a partial re-introduction for those who can afford it. Having graduated from an Irish university I'm now doing a masters in Scotland and can see the huge difference in what a university can offer students with a bit of extra cash in the coffers. Our universities are in dire need of additional funding and in a country of so few tax payers, asking the government, especially in the current climate, to foot the bill is unreasonable. To compete internationally the funding must come from somewhere. That said, with the partial re-introduction of fees I would expect the government to keep their level of funding up as well.

As for the topic. Ógra and YFG are both large enough to have many different schools of though on such a decisive issue like this. I don't think there is an official line on it. Such a proposal would need the whole of Ógra's input before a pro or anti stance was taken.

My own proposal is that the gross salary cut off for paying 25% fees (based on €5k incriments for 50%, 75% and 100%) should be worded as follows.

Families shall become liable for fees where reckonable income is at or in excess of the basic salary of a Principal Officer in the Irish Civil Service.

PO salary is currently approx €84.5k

I would cut the 25% support grant at €60k and cut registration fees up to €70k, with a payable basis also based on (25,50,75)% and 100% where liable for tuiion fees
