Mass Student Meeting on Climate Change Campaign - Saturday

Student Action on Climate Change - Public Meeting This Saturday 1.30pm, Trinity College Dublin (Goldsmith Hall, beside Pearse Street Train Station). All Welcome.

This Saturday (20th) at 1.30pm, Students Union leaders, activists and ordinary people from all over the country will gather in Trinity College (in Goldsmith Hall, beside Pearse Street Train Station) for a historic mass gathering, to launch the most important student political movement of a generation – the Student Action on Climate Change campaign.

People from all colleges will be present at this public gathering, as will many non-students, environmental NGOs and the Minister for Energy, Communications and Natural Resources, Eamon Ryan TD. (see agenda below)

This is the most important issue of our time, and Ireland is per capita one of the worst emitters of Co2 in the world. We must demand action now before it is too late.

    Speakers at the event are:
    • Eamon Ryan TD, Minister for Communications, Energy and Natural Resources
    • Helen Cantrell from the Stop Climate Chaos Coalition

Also present will be representatives from
    • Gluaiseacht, the environmental and social justice movement
    • Friends of the Earth

As well as launching a grass-roots campaign, the event will be a unique opportunity to meet new people, share ideas and build contacts.

As a students concerned about politics, we would like to invite politics.ie users to this historic event that will launch the biggest and most important student movement of our generation. Goldsmith Hall is just across the road from the back of Trinity College, next door to Pearse Street Train Station. Signposts will point the way from the entrances of Trinity, and food will be provided. Please feel free to contact me any time for more details (see below).

How do you know it will be a mass meeting?

Have many people sent back RSVPs or is this just your own personal opinion on how many people will turn up?

    Anything useful to say, Munion?

No doubt some whingers will come on and say it has nothing to do with students. I doubt they'll be saying the same thing in 20 years time.

I'm helping out this person should they be a marketing or advertising student. False advertising is rampant and detrimental to consumer confidence. By using the adjective "mass" this poster is giving an attribute to the service they are offering that is not necessarily true at the time of printing.

Plus it's such a common catchphrase of leftie's when they organise anything (Éirigí's "mass" demonstration on the Red Cow roundabout involving 7 people) that its desired impact is completely lost.

Actually, I was going to ask about the 'mass' thing myself - you don't know the attendence yet.

And what's the carbon footprint going to be of having everyone travel to Dublin?

    Munion, read the program again.
    Free cakes.
    Does that answer your question?

I think it's a great idea. The youth of today are the movers and shakers of tomorrow etc etc, good to get the minister there, not only to speak but to listen, young people are needed to keep him real etc etc.

Fair play for putting this together Dave. Great work.

One question? What the hell is the Minister doing there? The hypocrisies of the Greens in government are numerous and I can't see how the Task-forces on this and that will make Statuary emission reductions as was outlined in the Ivana Bacik Bill last week

Yes. Good point. Lets make Climate Change a political football by which we can try and score points off each other.
    Its not really that important.
    Well done!
