I was wondering if anyone could tell me how to get involved with a local party? Fine Gael or Labour maybe.

Also, how difficult is it to get properly involved and work your way up as i'd like to help out at elections and maybe have a career in politics.

    Any help would be great.

    Thanks!
    Hey,

Good to hear about your interest in politics.

I wouldnt rule out Fianna Fáil if I was you.
But it sounds like our young friend might have some principles.

Omnieoin I would not get involved in any party political politics to begin with. Get involved with local community politics. Issues that affect local people. Unless you want to be Taoiseach then I would suggest you go for FF as they are the most likely to be in power in the future.

I am a Sinn Fein member and have been since I was about 15 years of age. I personally don't like parliamentary politics too much preferring to focus my energies on issue that affect ordinary people in local communities. Just a suggestion but politics is quite a dirty business and if you join a political party at your age you may regret it in later years.

Like others I am pleased that younger people are interested in politics. I think you probably need to find out where you stand on the left-right spectrum before choosing a political party.

    Good luck anyway.

I think politics being a dirty businesss is a reflection of the political parties involved. Surely trying to clean up the parties themselves is a key task, and surely its young people who need to do this. However the very nature of some of the man parties would seem to preclude such a cleaning up.

I think communitiy politics is also a vital taks, assisting communities on the day to day issues etc but to brush aside active participation in political parties would be remiss. I'm not talking of pleading for crumbs from the tables of FF/PDs/Greens but political organisation has to flow from local struggles and community activitites. One grows out of the other.

i started of working in leinster house for 2 weeks with my local senator, joanna tuffy LAB and then got involved in her campaign. write to your local T.D.s ask to work with them for a bit during the summer, as you are seeking a taste in politics. then after your bit of work decide between FG or LAB

Yes, but thankfully many of them grow out of it and join the main party.

    Hi,

Thanks for all the replies! Its great to get so much help.

A poster had a good suggestion I think of asking to work with a local TD for a few days over summer?
    Any suggestions on this?

Also, would I be too young to start getting involved in politics or would I be better off waiting a few years until I'm a bit older and an election is closer? (eg, local elections etc)

    Thanks,
    eoin
