Are gay youths generally right wing?

When I was a young lad in politics all the gays were left wing both economically and socially. Back when homosexuality was illegal they seemed to show solidarity with other oppressed groups and minorities and were often represented by the left parties. I worked closely with many and got on with them.

These days though the young gays seem very selfish and individualistic. Now that they have legal rights they seem to have just forgotten about every other minority and have gone over to the right. I was in Trinity for a debate a while ago and it was full of right wing gays (Although I do struggle to tell the difference between snobby straight men and gays at times). Some of the stuff I heard was dreadful from these young debators. The amount of liberterain selfish crap spouted from these little ************************s in suits was terrifying. While they were all pro-abortion, gay marriage etc it was all privatisation, pro-rich, anti-worker rhetoric. I'd hate to be in uni today.

Wow. Charming. This comment doesn't at all take away from the other points you make

Complete rubbish - some gay people are on the right, some aren't. You can't make these sweeping generalisations based on your perception of gay people.

Ignoring your nonsense comments for a moment.

    1) I suppose it depends what you mean by "left" and "right"?

    2) Since when are a persons position on the spectrum dictated by their sexuality? If gays ought to be left wing, are you saying that straight people ought to be right wing?

    3) If a person is left wing (as you think gays should be) then should all of their political views on issues be on the left? For example, can one be in favour of gay marriage, but against abortion? I can think of at least two people I know who hold these positions

To be fair, it makes sense that most gays are quite socially liberal, but there's nothing inherently economically left wing about homosexuality. Sexuality (as it relates to politics) is about social policy and not economic.

Also, I think it's a bit of a leap to suggest that based on your experience at one debate in one university in which you encountered economically right wing guys who may or may not have been gay, that that implies a general economic disposition amongst all gay men.

I would say gay men and women are more likely to be socially liberal given the role social liberalism plays in allowing them to live full and free lives. But I expect when it comes to economic policy, most decide independent of their sexuality what economic policies they support.

Bulloni, gays in YFG are generally to the left of everyone else both socially and economically, including myself.

    Well according to Anne Coulter!

[ame=http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=V1wCRCpC3w8]YouTube - Ann Coulter on Gay Marriage and GOPROUD - CPAC 2011[/ame]

She thinks that the left has stolen the gays like they stole the feminists and the blacks before; all in a bid to "destroy the family".

I suppose what your saying is correct. As younger people who come out now see little prejudice against gays as compared with the past, they won't feel naturally inclined to side with other "oppressed" groups.
