University of Limerick Student Union Elections

In what seems to be a rather lacklustre affair so far the ULSU elections are on this week.

    President:

St John Ó Donnabháin (seeking re-election)

    Eoin Kelly

    Education:

    Alan Higgins (seeking re-election)

    Eamon Gardiner

    Welfare:

    Judith Lynch

    Jim Heneghan

    PPO:

    Niamh Clowry

    Séamus Ryan

    Elected unopposed as CSO:

    Patrick McHugh

I see 2 staunch YFG members on that list......and another who I think was a member at one stage (not sure if they still are)

Being members of the largest and strongest society in the college won't hurt their chances!

    Best of luck to them!

Ah yes, ULSU campaigns. I remember it well. Getting my arse kicked for PPO. In fainess though, considering my whole campaign basically consisted of me and another guy running around like headless chickens trying to man the stall (with 3 or 4 helpers every now and again) up against two Law and euro students with hordes of their hot classmates there to lure people to vote for them. By the Tuesday I realised I had no chance of winning, a little disconcerting. Now in this case it was okay because the girl who won had a clue what she was doing, but it is a dangerous situation when a position like PPO, which is essentially the editor of the paper, could be decided by a campaign, which dress it up all you want, is basically a popularity contest. Which is why personally I think the PPO should be appointed.

I must admit there is only one guy there that I knew had any connection to FG. Incase people are confused, the séamus Ryan character is not the guy beaten for Education officer last year.

Looking back on my electoral slaughter, (I got 282 first prefs, the nearest to me got 618) I can at least pull out two positives. Most of the Socialist party people made a point of only voting for St John and I and I pretty much cleaned up the mature students vote thanks to my campaign manager.

It is basically a popularity contest, there is no attention paid to what the candidates say they'll do, policies etc. It just the same sh!te every year.

Well St. John has been re-elected as has Alan, with Judith and Séamus taking the other 2 positions...

I think the best candidates won...even if Judith is a blueshirt...she'll make a brilliant Welfare officer and I sent her my congratulations personally this morning from my hospital bed...

Paddy's not that staunch and Eamon is a member of Ógra Fianna Fáil as well as YFG

Is she? I've known Judith since I was in 2nd year and while I know she is anti-republican, I didn't think she had any formal connections with YFG.
