    PDs reject nuclear power

I do think the headline is a little misleading, either SOME PDs voted against it this weekend, or the Young PDs, did.

A motion calling for the building of nuclear power plants in Ireland was defeated at the annual conference of the Young Progressive Democrats in Dublin at the weekend.

The motion from the Dublin Young Progressive Democrats said that nuclear power was "a safe, efficient and environmentally friendly method of producing electricity" and nuclear power plants should be developed in the country.

However, after a lengthy debate the motion was beaten on the basis that it would be too costly and wasn't needed with wind power in Ireland. - Irish Times

ahh yes, but ************************ he Brits right? so well use nucelar power, let another country drown itself in debt paying to build new plants, and take all the risks...thing is tho, if a plant on the west coast of the UK goes...so do we...

Well that might depend on wind-direction. The Windscale accident in the 50's left us fairly unscathed and the fallout was blown south. Of course the potential destructiveness of an accident back then was infinitely less. But we are in far greater danger with plants on this island, and safety - not principle - is more important in this debate. Any party that makes building nuke-plants here official policy is signing their electoral death-warrant I'm afraid.

Wind is unreliable and an eyesore that people will protest against.

Wave...we havn't invested in it to an extent that it could replace fossil fuels.

Nope. Certainly not us in the YPDs. The motion was defeated on the grounds that it would be too costly, noy because of the safety (or lackthereof) of nuclear power.

As for wind being unreliable, I think interconnectors are great things.
The standard of excellence is an infinite suggestiveness, naturalism is the one thing to be condemned.
