    Republican Felon Loses Senate Seat

The loss of Ted Stevens to Anchorage mayor Mark Begich in the Alaska senate race means Sarah Palin can’t appoint herself to succeed Stevens as she may have hoped. It also means Stevens had an unhappy 85th birthday.

WASHINGTON - Convicted Sen. Ted Stevens lost his re-election bid to Democrat Mark Begich on Tuesday after the last large batch of votes was counted. The longest-serving Republican in the history of the Senate trailed Anchorage Mayor Mark Begich by 3,724 votes after Tuesday's count of about 24,000 absentee and contested ballots. It seems that Palin wasn't going to do that anyway. Appointing herself to the Senate in the next few months would be a little too audacious, even for her, apparently!

This is probably the best result. It's always best for corrupt individuals to be dealt with by the electorate, rather than having to be removed, and tarnishing the institutions of democracy in the process

No, she wasn;t going to appoint herself - the plan (apparently) was for her to not appoint a replacement, but rather to insist on a Special Election. She would then run for the vacant senate seat, which she would win massively due to her huge opinion poll support.

While the Begich victory closes this off completely, Ms. Palin's poll ratings in Alaska were supposedly not strong enough to make this plan enough of a lock to rick it in any event.

    Yes, it's a great result.

Odd that the counting took so long though, there's no many people there!
