    GOP Civil War

CNN Political Ticker: All politics, all the time Blog Archive - GOP senator: McCain betrayed Republican principles - Blogs from CNN.com

he conservative senator, speaking to a group of GOP officials gathered in Myrtle Beach at a conference on the future of the Republican Party, described how the party had strayed from its own "brand," which, according to DeMint, should represent freedom, religious-based values and limited government.
They're already contradicting themselves inside the same sentence.

So far their diagnosis is: We were not right wing ENOUGH.

    "
His proposal for amnesty for illegals. His support of global warming, cap-and-trade programs that will put another burden on our economy. And of course, his embrace of the bailout right before the election was probably the nail in our coffin this last election. And he has been an opponent of drilling in ANWR, at a time when energy is so important. It really didn't fit the label, but he was our package."
These guys really are screwed if they think ANWAR, campaign finance reform and global warming were the main things on the publics mind in the elections of 2006 and 2008, that the people thought the christian right didn't have ENOUGH influence that they were not conservative ENOUGH on economics or anti-environment ENOUGH.

"Americans do prefer a traditional conservative government," he said. "They just did not believe Republicans were going to give it to them."
Yep, they preferred small conservative government, so voted for big govt liberals, see, it makes perfect sense

I think their only chance of success now is to dump the social conservatisim and stand for freedom across the board socially and economically, with some kind of modified version of the free market ideas, maybe with more Nixon style economics.

You do realise that there is practically nothing separating the two parties? Issues that are trivial in a free society were amplified and argued over for months during the election campaign.

The fact of the matter is, the GOP doesn't stand for any kind of freedom, economic or social. To call them the free marketeers and to blast the Democrats as 'the socialists' is frankly ludicrous - both parties are massive statists.

That bull sh i t worked in 2000, but the subsequent eight years showed there are MASSIVE differences between the parties.
Just because they don't believe in your ideal role of govt does not mean they have no contrasts between them.

This is a short list of what policies Mr. Obama and Mr. McCain endorse as they run for the position of leader of the so-called "free" world...

-Maintain the Federal Reserve and its power to ruin the economy and erode citizens’ standard of living with inflation, making credit too easily available, and inflicting the boom-and-bust cycle

-Maintain the income tax and the commensurate level of federal spending

-Prolong the recession by trying to forcibly prevent normal market corrections, such as falling prices, failures of unsound businesses, and liquidation of bad debt

-Maintain the FDA and the government’s medical- and pharmaceutical-industrial complexes

-Maintain – and expand – the government’s ruinous healthcare policies and programs, which, along with the pharmaceutical-industrial complex, are the root causes of healthcare being so expensive

-Continue the Drug War, which has accomplished nothing in decades but wasting billions of dollars, fostering black markets and all of their inherent problems, and giving the U.S. the highest number of imprisoned people in the world – both in absolute terms and as a percentage of its population

-Maintain U.S. troop presence in Iraq indefinitely

-Perpetuate the rest of the military-industrial complex, including permanent U.S. troop presence and bases in more than half of the world’s countries and foreign "aid"

-Continue – if not expand – the bogus "War on Terror"

-Perpetuate – if not expand – post-9/11 agencies’ and programs’ assaults on civil liberties

-Continue untenable entitlement programs like Social Security

-Perpetuate government schools from the federal level

-Continue dismantling property rights (which are the only possible source of real environmental protection), eroding human living standards, decrying prosperity and plenty, and subsidizing "green" industries that can’t survive in the market, all under the guise of "protecting the environment" and battling the meaningless catch-all term, "climate change"

Isn't It great to have a choice!!

    Gop

If the Republicans are engaged in a civil war I hope they use that 'shock and awe' combat strategy of which they are so fond...(one shudders to think of the attendant 'collateral damage'...will it be enough?)

Republicans move to the right in 1980, 84, and at the very end of the 1988 campaign turning a 16% deficit to a 7% lead and win. Move to the centre in 92, 96 and '00 lose twice and lose the popular vote in '00. Move to the right in '04 and win move to the centre in '08 and lose.

    Anyone spot a pattern?

In 2008 more people thought that slick Barry would cut taxes that McCain would even though the reverse was true. So economic conservatism was still popular.

In 2008, tough measures against illegal immigration pass in Arizona and traditional marriage is reaffirmed in every state where the question is asked.

You know, maybe the Repulicans losing had something to do with the war in Iraq...

I'm just putting that out there.

    I do I do!! Palin 2012! Or better yet, Palin/Buchanan 2012!

As for the difference between the 2 parties, on a domestic level it seems to be between the very fiscally responsible 36% income tax rate and the radical socialist rate of 39.5%. It's enough to make you grab your tricorn hat and start raising your own personal militia.

    Paul/Baldwin 2012!

DR, your "slick Barry" act is getting seriously tiresome. The guy's name is Barack Obama. No-one calls him "Barry", so give it a rest.
