CNN poll gives debate to Obama

CNN just posted their poll - 58% Obama 31% McCain

    Obama clear winner.

Many live pollsters here kept remarking on how angry McCain looked. This may have been a factor in how people reacted to the debate.

CBS poll also gives debate to Obama by a wider margin of 53% Obama 22% McCain. This is a poll of uncommitted voters.

In all three debates, I've always thought McCain has done better than the polls end up showing (and I'm an Obama supporter.) I think people just have a visceral reaction against him and that weird smile and all that anger, I guess he just comes off kind of a nut. Someone on the radio the other day said we should demand to know whether or not he's received mental health treatment for his years as a POW. I wonder.

Interesting figures from the CBS poll of uncommitted voters:

68% trust Obama on health care, up from 61% pre-debate.

30% trust McCain on health care, up from 27% pre-debate.

64% think Obama will raise their taxes; 50% think McCain will.

64% think Obama shares their values, up from 54%. McCain's figures go up to 55% from 52% on this issue.

63% trust Obama to handle a crisis, up from 50%. McCain's figures go up from 78% to 82% on this issue.

65% trust Obama to make the right decisions about the economy, up from 54%. McCain's figures go up from 38% to 48% on this issue.

76% think that Obama understands voters' needs and problems, up from 66%. McCain's figures go up from 36% to 48% on this issue.

57% of uncommitted voters remain uncommitted; 30% switched to Obama; 14% to McCain.

Obama's weaknesses are on taxes and the handling of a crisis.

He's now got three weeks to hammer home the message that 95% of Americans won't pay more tax under his proposals.

I don't think he's going to convince people that his ability to handle a crisis would be better than McCain's but it's unlikely to be a decisive issue.

Text polls don't count now you surely know this - they are not statistically controlled. The one on MSNBC gives it to Obama 85%.

The Republicans and their fellow-travellers are grasping at any straw that will tell them that no matter what any other poll says, this poll, deeply flawed as it is, says that Sarah Palin is heading for the White House. Pathetic.

Surely even you know that a) text polls are utterly unreliable, and b) only Republicans watch Fox News, as it conforms utterly with their view of the world.

he displays more empathy........but he still voted for the patriot act and is, therefore, repugnant.

McCain's "anger" and odd face expressions are making the news on morning new shows. Here is a YouTube clip that is making the rounds...
