    Third debate: McCain vs Obama

    McCain is sounding optimistic:

(CNN)John McCain predicted Sunday he would beat Barack Obama at the final presidential debate this week.
"After I whip his you-know-what in this debate, we're going to be going out 24/7," the Republican nominee told volunteers at his campaign headquarters in Arlington, Virginia, sparking laughter and applause from the group. McCain immediately added: "I want to emphasize again, I respect Senator Obama. We will conduct a respectful race, and we will make sure that everybody else does, too."
The debate is in Hofstra University, New York on Wednesday night

The debate, moderated by Bob Scheiffer of CBS, will feature the economy and other domestic issues.

McCain needs to win this debate , will Scheiffer bring up Ayers, race... ?

As Nate Silver notes in Five Thirty Eight, McCain is up to something... Drudge front page is positioning him for a comeback

Bill Kristol is today recommending a radical step...

It's all or nothing for this debate, McCain needs to control the news cycle going into it

    So the options are

    1) Fire his campaign
    2) Suspend ads & buy a single slot half hour of primetime just like Obama
    3) Attack the newly created Republican Racists
    4) ...

    ?

This game-changer needs to be done before Wednesday...

The only option on the list should be:

    1) Fix the financial crisis.

That is what has McCain behind, not supposed racists, not Sarah Palin, not his age and not any of the other nonsense the MSM have being trying to pin on him.

It's worth remembering that even in the Great Depression in 1932, 39.7% still voted for Republican president Herbert Hoover. A lot of American conservatives would sooner vote for a pig with lipstick than vote Democrat. McCain will be president.

Mrmrmrm usually politicians have as much effect on economics as they have on the weather ... and look what happens to World Peace when they try to do that?

McCain is outside of the tent on this one, his economics advisers makr Bertie's LSE credentials look good.

The irony is that McCain should have the rub on economic issues but economists have deserted him, the type of loon who proposes a "gas tax holiday" won't be listened to. McCain's proposed deficit increase ($5T) is more than double Obama's. Obama may be a leftist redistributionist but at least he is fiscally prudent.

I don't see any way McCain can gain credibility on economy.

Apparently, he's got a new pitch--I'm the underdog. The first genuine thing out of his mouth in weeks, actually:

I'm having trouble with your logic here. Hoover lost in a landslide but some people voted for him; therefore McCain will be president. Hmmm.

He would need to win big on the economy and that would require something clever going well beyond the debate.

Independents are not choosing between McCain or Obama because of either's policies, they are looking at their disappearing pension funds and choosing a Democrat over a Republican because they are pissed off and want a change in the White House. If people could rewind the clock I bet they wish they had Hillary Clinton taking over in January. I believe Obama's administration will be a disaster. We will then unfortunately see the return of the neo-cons in 2012 once the extreme left of the Democratic Party have made fools of themselves for four years.

And yes I am a bitter Hillary supporter

Yes American Conservatives will vote for McCain. However that isn't going to get him a majority. At this stage I think McCain needs something close to a miracle to win and I can't see that happening in this debate. At the very least he will need to hammer Obama.
