    They are in Ireland (you are covered after a year or more of payments, but the company can't refuse to cover you if you were ever sick)

    In the US, you aren't covered for pre-existing conditions even if you didn't know you had them and were never sick with it. If a prudent person would have gone to a doctor and got something diagnosed, then they can retroactively cancel your policy and bill you for treatments already paid. Its up to the company to claim and up to the patient to fight it in court.
