US: Lose your house, lose your vote

Just when you thought the Republicans couldn't get any lower.

Michigan Republicans plan to foreclose African-American voters

The chairman of the Republican Party in Macomb County, Michigan, a key swing county in a key swing state, is planning to use a list of foreclosed homes to block people from voting in the upcoming election as part of the state GOP’s effort to challenge some voters on Election Day.

“We will have a list of foreclosed homes and will make sure people aren’t voting from those addresses,” party chairman James Carabelli told Michigan Messenger in a telephone interview earlier this week. He said the local party wanted to make sure that proper electoral procedures were followed.

State election rules allow parties to assign “election challengers” to polls to monitor the election. In addition to observing the poll workers, these volunteers can challenge the eligibility of any voter provided they “have a good reason to believe” that the person is not eligible to vote. One allowable reason is that the person is not a “true resident of the city or township.”

The Michigan Republicans’ planned use of foreclosure lists is apparently an attempt to challenge ineligible voters as not being “true residents.”

Unfortunately for Obama the state official in charge of the state's elections (the Secretary of State) is a Republican. In any case, just 2.71% of the county's electorate are African-American, so it's not going to effect the overall outcome unless it happens statewide.

Hardly surprising. There is absolutely no depth to which the US Republican Party will not sink. Scum.

They are at it in other states as well. McCain should come out now and state that everyones right sto vote should be facilitated rather than hindered. Republicans pay lip service to democracy when it suits them. Appalling stuff and utterly indefensible.

So even when pro-democratic organisations submit illegal registrations (ACORN) a Republican official is scum because he legally uses methods to challenge suspicious registrations.

You need to read some Greg Palast.

No one has ever been charged with illegal voting. It doens't happen.

Hey, scum floats. Please get your metaphors and insults at the same level.

As to the topic, it won't make too much difference. Foreclosures happen to both Dem and Rep voters, it'll hit both sides fairly evenly. Most likely in the lower middle-income group. They would have been the most likely to have bought a house recently and most likely to be hit with redundancies or slow-downs at work. The lower income group tend to rent, it won't effect them.

Re: US: Lose your house, lose your vote

This is just one of the Republican tricks that they're trying--in Florida (of all places) they are circulating a mailer telling registered Democrats they want to double-check their "unconfirmed" party affiliations while asking for money. A letter signed by McCain tells the Democrats: "We have you registered as a Republican." There is a lot of confusion, to say the least. In Virginia, they're going after students, telling out-of-state students that registering in Virginia means they've declared independence from their parents and can no longer be claimed as a dependent on their income tax filings--and if they have a scholarship attached to their parents' residence, they could lose funding.

With all of this nonsense and as close as this election is, I expect the legal wranglings are going to be more intense than 2000. How nice for us all.

Republican voters, numbnuts that they are, actually vote for their own impoverishment.

(I take your point, myksav, about better metaphor selection )
