GOP Smear Machine

By the "GOP Smear Machine" I mean the unofficial rag tag bunch that are closely allied to the GOP. People such as the "Swift Boat Veterans for Truth". These groups, whilst technically not part of the GOP, are funded by GOP donors and GOP operatives work with them.

In the summer of 2004 the conservative gadfly Jerome R. Corsi shot to the top of the best-seller lists as co-author of “Unfit for Command,” the book attacking Senator John Kerry’s record on a Vietnam War Swift boat that began the larger damaging campaign against Mr. Kerry’s war credentials as he sought the presidency.

Almost exactly four years after that campaign began, Mr. Corsi has released a new attack book painting Senator Barack Obama, the Democrats’ presumed presidential nominee, as a stealth radical liberal who has tried to cover up “extensive connections to Islam”

Several of the book’s accusations, in fact, are unsubstantiated, misleading or inaccurate.

Nonetheless, it is to make its first appearance on The New York Times best-seller list for nonfiction hardcovers this Sunday — at No. 1.

The publisher is Threshold Editions, a division of Simon & Schuster whose chief editor is Mary Matalin, the former Republican operative turned publisher-pundit.

Mr. Corsi described most of the critiques of his book as “nitpicking,” like a contradiction of his claim that Mr. Obama had failed to dedicate his book “Dreams of My Father” to his family; Mr. Obama dedicated the book to several family members, in the introduction.

There's been a few smears so far but this is the starting gun, I predict things are going to get very dirty.

If they can dig up a "proud of my country for the first time" moment ala the missus on Barack I'd opin that that would make him unfit to be president too. Shouldn't be hard. A radical exclusivist Black Nationalist politician like Hussein is almost certain to have revealed himself somewhere.

I was looking through this book at the store recently and will probably buy it. What exactly is a smear. What he says is either true or it is a lie. Is a smear something that is true but that you wish to be a lie.

Do you have an example of something that Corsi says that you believe to be untrue or have you read the book.

Like saying someone is running as a patsy for someone else's third term? Or refering to someone as sinile and denegrating someone's wife for her appearance or a past condition which developed in response to two ruptured discs (happened to my mother, ruptured discs not the addiction, she said it was as bad as childbirth, but more enduring), that what you are talking about?

So if you say that McCain is elderly and past retirement age are you just stating the obvious, or are you smearing him by failing to state that he has thus a life time of experience to draw upon? If we state that Obama's upbringing was not similar to most Americans' are we smearing or simply stating the truth?

Has Obama come out and called Corsi a liar. From headlines I have seen this has been suggested as the correct course of action by John Kerry. So Obama had better stand up to these charges if they have no merit.
