McCain about to announce running mate?

Rumours are circulating and Robert Novak is reporting that McCain is about to announce his running mate in an attempt to step on Obama's foreign trip bounce.

If this is true then McCain is an idiot. He should be saving this announcement to step on Obama's bounce coming out of the Dem convention in August. That would be the smart move. Not blowing up like a child screaming "Look at me! Look at me!"

    McCain - can't run a campaign - can't run a country.

Politico is reporting that the "leak" was a feint by the McCain camp and that he is likely to hold off on an announcement until after the Dem convention.

The rumour combined with a trip to New Orleans this week had heightened suspicions that he was going to announce Bobby Jindal as his running mate.

Robert Novak who broke the original story that McCain was about to announce a VP is now reporting that the McCain campaign used him to draw some press attention to McCain during Obama's overseas trip.

"I got a suggestion from a very senior McCain aide that he was gonna announce it this week," Novak told Fox News. "And they suggested I put it out ... so I just put something on the internet."

"I since have been told by certain people that this was a dodge, trying to get a little publicity to rain on Obama's campaign," he said. "That's pretty reprehensible if it's true. But we'll find out in a few days."

There was speculation about this a while back. I'm suprised. It's a bit of a sop to anyone stupid enough to imagine that the Republican Party is chock full of minorities. But I'd say the poor beleaguered Lousiana Governor will be happy to get out. I understand his agenda is being sat on heavily by the State Assembly.

To clarify, I don't think it will be him. If the Democrats supposedly won't vote for a black man (which I don't believe), the not exactly enthusiastic Republicans might find more reason in an Indian-American not to support McCain.

Speculation is all we have for the next while so I'm not loathe to engage in it.

As of now I honestly have no clue as to which of the many possibilities will be chosen for either nominees VP slot. The process reminds me of the movie with Joan Allen and Gary Oldman The Contender that the frontrunner can fall at anytime even at the last hurdle so while it may be possible to identify the current frontrunner until the VP is announced nothing is certain. A little bit obvious but that's why I'm not really investing too much time thinking about it.

Jindal is losing his shine with the LA electorate because his ethics reform hasn't really delivered on campaign promises and he's a bit of an idealogue republican which is not playing well in the current economic climate in the state.

Aasif Mandvi put it brilliantly on The Daily Show last year - "Brown? Brown. It's fine Jon...I know I'm brown. I'm from India. I'm tech support/cardiologist brown, not dishwasher/Los Angeles parking attendant brown. I say this with no disrespect, Jon." All of the Indian men around my age, that I know or are friends with, are Republican/Libertarian while their wives are all Democrats - their parents generation tend to be Democrat but my personal knowledge of older Indians is much smaller.

Novak is a cretan who should be blindfolded, gagged and locked in a vault until he dies, after outing a CIA agent I dont' know how anyone takes him seriously anymore, clearly the McCain camp doesnt' as they thought he'd be stupid enough to use this leak on.

How does this prat keep getting work????????????????

Re: McCain about to announce running mate?

I heard a rumour that McCain was about to announce liberal Republican Senator Olympia Snowe (Maine) as his running mate.

While this ticket appeals to me I don't know whether picking someone with her record of aisle crossing is brilliant (independent appeal, both candidates rebels and have clashed with Bush and Snowe is a former head of the senate small business committee) or disasterous (last straw for conservatives and they sit the election out in droves)

To be honest I doubt it. Too risky. Would be nice though.....
