The discussion surrounding the end of the Clinton campaign is turning towards the amount of misogyny and anti-feminine remarks made by so many of the male pundits during the past year. The list is long - On Sunday DNC chairman Howard Dean stated that there was much sexism in the campaign and the reporting of it by many male pundits and journalists. Christ Matthews had to make a public apology for his angry misogynous remarks - David Shuster was suspended from the air for two weeks, Alex Castellanos on CNN was allowed free range with his vitriol. Keith Olberman and Howard Fineman also had to make apologies for on air discussion which would have had them suspended forever if they made the same comments about a black candidate.
But now it is the morning after and there is a growing consensus that sexism played a role in how all of this got reported and that Obama got a free ride in the face of the over scrutinizing of Hillary. The imbalance was palpable. Now we have Christ Mathews admitting on air two days ago that he made mistakes and "has a lot to learn" about how to discuss female candidates. Yeah, he does. Many of the other male reporters do also.
The interesting factor is that younger women – who had been in a false state of “equality’ have been awakened to the latent sexism in society. The ugly remarks about Hillary’s clothes, her voice, her “anger” have all resonated with the younger female voters who really had never heard such things before – welcome to the past. The past is not dead and gone – it isn’t even dead.
