Obama gives blank cheque to Israel lobby

In his speech to AIPAC, the main pro-Israel lobby group in the US, Obama is quoted saying he would do "everything, and I mean everything" to stop Iran getting a nucear weapon.

That's warlike talk, all three candidates are now committed to stopping Iran from getting nuclear weapons by any means necessary.

They've left themselves no wriggle room, any spark could ignite a major war.

The sad reality is that without the support of the Israel-lobby, you won't get elected president. As Bush Snr discovered in 1992 when just 10% of Jews voted for him after he threatened to with-hold loans from Israel over settlement activity.

    Depressing stuff
We should be shaping an Ireland based on full respect for the human and civil rights of all our people, an Ireland of which Larkin and Connolly would be very proud.

Change you can believe in, indeed...

I was wondering why Rupert Murdoch had given him his imprimatur.

This is the most hateful anguish of all among men, to understand much and to prevail in nothing.

This would be a problem if Iran was actually trying to get the bomb rather than it just being an accusation Bush et al are cooking up to justify an attack. Obama's cosying up to the Israeli lobby this primary season is an area where he and I diverge and although I understand the electoral reasons why he's doing it, it disgusts and disappoints me.

On the other hand making speeches and statements like these will give him credibility in the future when he's president and attempting to resolve the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, and as the US underpins the Israeli economy with billions in aid each year they have the power to dictate terms to Israel or threaten to pull the plug and let them go down the drain. I don't know what he will do but I'm hopeful based on his resolution of the death penalty issue in Illinois.

As an aside - it wasn't given much fanfare but the Bush administration is giving the Saudis a civilian nuclear power program which is interesting as they claim Iran doesn't need nuclear power for energy production because they have such large reserves of oil. Bush claims that the energy production claim by Iran is a smokescreen for weapons production so a. he's giving Saudi Arabia the bomb or b. there's a legitimate need for nuclear power despite having oil reserves.

And don't forget the 200 to 500 nukes that Israel has, they can take care of themselves.

Disappointing but not surprising. You'd almost think they were running for elections in Israel.

The Jewish vote is quite small and traditionally voted democratic anyway. Its more the fundamentalist Christians that provide the main pro-Israel vote.
Yes but I mentioned the Israel-lobby, which I acknowledge is broader than Jews. But Jews themselves, while a tiny minority, have disproportionate electoral influence in the Electoral College because of their concentration in several crucial Electoral College states like New York (8.4%), Florida etc.

I’m beginning to dislike this guy more by the day; Israel needs to be faced down for the good of everyone, not just innocent Palestinians.
