    McCain drops backer over sermon

Senator McCain had actively courted Rev Hagee's endorsement

US presidential hopeful John McCain has rejected the backing of a Church leader who said Hitler was carrying out "God's will" in chasing the Jews from Europe.

It comes after the comments by evangelical preacher Rev John Hagee, which were made in the 1990s, re-emerged on a US news website.

In a sermon, Rev Hagee said the Nazi leader was carrying out a divine plan to gather Jews into the Holy Land.
Well, um, FT... seeing as you appear convinced that Pastorgate would sink Obama, how can they both lose the election?

Outrageous remarks indeed. But McCain did not go to this pastor's services from 20 yrs, have his children baptised by him, his marriage conducted by him, or openly claim his book was motivated by his associations with Hagee. So not quite the same as Wright.

I dont know how this stuff plays in the US but I would be much more concerned if I was MC Cain i find his priest/minster highly more insulting.
But I find it odd that this matters at all if I was ever running for parliament here Idont think what my priest says should count (not that I actualy have a priest the last time I was at mass was 7 years ago)

Yes but religion is still a big deal in the US and as such these sorts of issues are going to matter over there.
