Donald comes from the realist school of foreign policy which puts accomplishing common objectives before pious lectures to other states about their domestic policies. Obamas foreign policy left Trump an Iraq and Syria largely in ISIS hands - this week ISIS lost its last city in Syria and ISIS is losing in Iraq.

He went all over Europe behaving like a despot and a spoilt brat, picking fights with everyone
Now he goes to Asia and behaves like a pussy

    He comes from no school,
Attempts to paint him as some sort of strategist are risible
He doesn't know what he will do from minute to minute

No, you utter, utter nincompoop. He is not a realist. Hell, what you are trying to use to distinguish realism from something else can just as much be said about liberal internationalism or neoconservatism.

In any case, those two points are pretty much the extent of Trump’s alleged “realism.” Nowhere in his Times interview do you find references to the core logic of realist theory or the key tenets of a “realist” foreign policy. Trump talks a lot about power and strength but doesn’t say where it comes from, and he never identifies what U.S. vital interests are or presents a George Kennan-esque focus on key centers of industrial power. There is no indication that Trump understands the workings of balance of power theory — arguably the core idea in the realist canon — and there’s little sign that he grasps the essential features of a globalized world economy.

The US paid too much attention to the Middle East and Europe not enough attention to the Asia-Pacific region. China is a bigger threat to US interests than Russia but they spent the 90's pushing into the former Soviet sphere of influence and ignoring the larger problem to the east.

It would have been in their best interests to pivot to south east Asia before they did, that's the fault of successive administrations prior to this one.

Has anyone else thought the bullying, fire-breathing demagoging Trump actually turns out to be keen to please in a one-on-one situation? eg the fulsome personal warmth to Xi Jinping, and on other occasions to President Macron, President Nieto etc ; persons he had previously announced to be ideological adversaries.

At least in Da Nang, unlike Presidents John Kerry and John McCain ( had they been elected), Trump won't have the embarrassment of regaling his hosts with stories of 'the last time I came through here' [on a Zippo raid with the Green Berets], as he wisely stayed Stateside during the sixties getting several draft deferments as a student.

Yeah, when some were doing battle with the VC , Trump was avoiding encounters with the VD.
