It's fascinating..especially at these early stages! The arcane process by which America hauls itself out of the couch every four years to elect the world's most powerful person is, for me, absolutely gripping.Originally Posted by badinage

American politics is generally much more interesting than its pale Irish counterpart. It's not a surprise that political geeks here would take an interest in what's happening over there
Jackson, Mississipi. I was there for ten days in 2002. My sister was there for 8 months. She said I didn't see the half of it (The racism, not the state). I'm just talking from experience, no need to get snappy because your experience of the place was different.Originally Posted by kim chi

I don't detect any hints of racism up here in Massachusetts. The governor won easily last November to become the 1st black governor. On the republican side there is a type of racism as the big radio guys put on a drawl when they laugh at Huckabee and one of them refers to him as Suckabee. Yesterday the topic was the lovechild but today we are back to Mitt and what a great man Tancredo is.
Great, the illusion of diversity. Isn't democracy grand.Originally Posted by The Red Rose of Cork

Actual morality is doing what is right regardless of what you're told. Religious morality is doing what you're told, regardless of if it's right.
Funny that, given that they're in the same partyOriginally Posted by Akrasia

That is not all that important. The racist South won't vote for a Black candidate for president. Dem voters should take account of that.
Gore won no southern state in 2000, but if he had got only a few thousand more votes in Florida (which is itself sometimes regarded as a southern state, and sometimes not), he would have won the election.
As long as Obama has a chance in Florida, it does not really matter how the rest of the south votes.
Ah now, America still has big problems with regards to race. They're hardly alone in this regard but let's not apply whitewash where it's patently not needed.
