What exactly is preventing these institutions from simply telling their employees:

"Our coverage provides for contraceptives, but we urge you not to use them."?
Don't blame me; I voted for Kodos.

Totally, this is silly indeed, "secular jihad", give me a break.

That said, I do think for reasons I have stated that Obama may end up caving on this one.

His opponents will set it out as, not a "contraception issue" but rather a "freedom of religion issue", ie an attack on all religions.

Which of course it is, and he can't win that one.

Freedom of religion is not necessarily infringed upon by employers providing their employees with the means to do things which are contrary to the teachings of the religion.

    ...And Obama wins...

Obama riled up Republicans on contraception, and then delivers a knock-out punch.

That's if you believe that he was really being that clever. And if he was, then I wouldn't be so sure that it has worked - it could have just pissed off Catholic Democrats and others who believe it an attack on religious liberty, then pissed off the liberal feminist wing too. Plus the backtracking makes him look weak...

In your opinion. But will voters in the USA of all religions (and none) be inclined to agree. I don't think so. Lots of people (guess 30%) would think the federal government should not be telling any employer what their insurance plans should provide. Add in a very real concern about religious freedoms and your are a short hop skip and jump from 50+% of voters.
