Remember Reagan was re-elected in 1984 with an unemployment rate approaching 8%.

The American electorate will decide on a few factors -

• How well they trust & like the candidate (Obama scores well there - he is consistently well liked, even when performance is judged to be bad),
• Can the other guy do better? ,
• What are the prospects coming down the pike?

Obama will not have it easy, but (as I have always maintained) he has a good fighting chance.

One of the main reasons Obama is rising in the polls is that he was never as unpopular as some of the commentary (and, indeed, polls) have suggested over the last year or so.

The more hysterical charges against him - people calling him a failed single termer after 2 years, "worst President ever" and all that nonsense - seem to have been not a lot more than wishful thinking. Opponents, using classic Rovian and neo-Con tactics, have sought to forge their own reality simply by saying it's so and then repeating it again and again. Remember that tactic from the nightmare of the Bush era? Just say something often enough and it becomes "the truth". That was what happened with No Child Left Behind, the Clean Air Act, the Patriot Act and, of course, WMD's and Iraq.

But they completely overdid this with Obama, making charges that were obviously not true. Worst President ever, 2 years after Bush left office, was nothing but bad comedy and it was inevitable people would eventually see though it.
