US school cancels prom to avoid lesbian student bringing a date

Interesting, so what is the situation here ?

US school cancels prom to avoid lesbian student bringing a date - Telegraph
A school in America has decided to cancel its prom dance after a lesbian student demanded she be able to attend with her girlfriend and wear a tuxedo.

    Published: 7:00AM GMT 11 Mar 2010
The Mississippi school district's policy requires that senior prom dates be of the opposite sex. The American Civil Liberties Union of Mississippi had given the district until Wednesday to change that policy and allow 18-year-old Constance McMillen to escort her girlfriend, who is also a student, to the dance on April 2.

I know people who brought same sex dates to debs balls, I know people who brought opposite sex dates, I know people who brought no date at all and I know people who went in groups.

These issues do not arise as readily in Ireland as people would suggest by reference to American news articles.

What are you asking? We don't have school districts. There's no rules or laws as to who you can bring that come from the state. Given that this is one story in podunk Mississipi, it's unlikely this is a huge issue in America either.

This is probably code speak for a prom where lesbians are banned:

School prom off after lesbian?s date request - Education- msnbc.com
District officials say they hope private citizens will host a prom.
And indeed as per above we are very much live & let live here - oddly we seem to have overtaken the USA on social liberalism (remember not too long back here only married couples could get condoms on prescription)

I'm not sure if the US is merely stalling... or going backwards... but it is falling out of synch imo

I've never heard of a student bring a same sex date to a debs ball or any other sort of event here. In Ireland there's a strong stigma amongst young people over being LGBT. Even those who are fully comfortable with their orientation would be reluctant to bring their bf/gf to a dance.
Every one sees what you appear to be, few really know what you are, and those few dare not oppose themselves to the opinion of the many, who have the majesty of the state to defend them.

So long as you think like us, look like us and behave like us.

Bible-belt American notions of "freedom" in action!

You can't point to an event in Mississipi and say they're swinging conservative no more than you can point at 2 guys getting married in WA and say they're swinging liberal. The US is simply too big and the differences between states and coasts too large to come out with simplifed statements.

Considering there are schools that have only started having 'mixed race' Proms in the last few years, this is hardly suprising.....
