If schools are to have an "ethos", they should have the courage of their convictions to defend it.

A ridiculous climbdown by the school.

I've never heard of a similar situation in Irish schools. Perhaps some of our homosexual posters can post about their debs dates.

See, I'd argue that that's a form of voluntary segregation. If you consider yourself different you're given others a chance to treat you different. I do understand there is a difference but in socio terms there shouldn't be.
Every one sees what you appear to be, few really know what you are, and those few dare not oppose themselves to the opinion of the many, who have the majesty of the state to defend them.

I'm going to take a wild guess and suggest that you're the sort of homophobe whose entire intellectual opposition to homosexuality can be summarised as:

"Ewwww, the willy is going up the bum?! Noooo!"

If a school here pulled that same stunt in the name of their 'ethos' then it would be just another excellent grounds for fully secularizing our school system.

    You don't need another excuse.

You're right. The case is already made without a school pulling a stunt like that.

I know of some guys who brought guys to their debs, but I am positive they are in the minority. As far as the ethos of the school goes, I'm not sure whether a school which practises discrimination against homosexuals or other groups should receive public money.

Do women usually turn up for debs dressed in a tuxedo?

Er, let's remember what these things are all about. For many students it's about under-age drinking and getting laid (or, if they manage to control themselves, both). How do they fit into the "ethos" generally? (Before any question of sexuality arises.)

How does wearing a tuxedo equate to pretending to be male. Or are you arguing that all women wearing jeans and a t-shirt are so pretending. Knock your head against a wall - hard - and see can you rattle up a bit of intelligence for yourself. Good lad!
