Why is Obama so opposed to tort reform?

Why are the Democrats in general and President Obama in particular so opposed to tort reform? This is an area that has been associated with healthcare costs for a long time. Medical professionals are plagued with astronomically high premiums because of lawsuits encouraged by lawyers. It seems as if the Democrats are overly protective of the attorneys who are major contributers to their coffers. When a law professor is the head of your party it becomes more complicated. It is estimated, by the way, that tort reform would result in a saving of $54 in deficit spending and significantly more in overall savings. The savings would not have been huge in comparison the the whole plan but would have saved families at least a thousand dollars. Now that healthcare looks as if it will be shelved it is time to emphasize that tort reform must not be shelved with it.

Well, medical professionals have the highest premiums pretty much everywhere. They deal in life and death. However, I am not against the idea. What are the proposals?

Hate to disappoint you but medical professionals in the US are not phenomeonally wealthy. In fact they are paid a pittance compared to our Consultants and unlike our Consultants there are fewer opportunities to rise to the senior most levels. And they don't get to these levels anywhere as soon as our doctors do.

The few who do are well-rewarded, but being a doctor in the US is no light burden.

There you are wrong. Some areas are undeserved by professionals. People are no longer willing to work in OBGYN for example because of the high instances of malpractice suits. General practice has also been hit. Most people who do remain in this area are earning nowhere near what people think. Much of the legal stuff is Greek to me. It is hard to find anything concrete and what I do find relates to years ago (Tort Reform). It will be on the agenda as Obama goes to Republicans to negotiate a revised healthcare bill.

From what I know regarding OBGYN if there is a problem and you are the Doctor "it is your fault" irrespective of whether it is or not. There is always someone to blame, it's just a matter of making sure it is the person who can pay out the most money!

Exactly, herself used to work in OBGYN but no longer does. Everyone wants and expects a perfect baby if there are complications (and no one wishes for that, then it is the doctor's fault and the lawyers are only too willing to make them pay while they get their percentage.
