The Brits stopped that crap at the end of the last century.
So, wtf did the Irish start it again this century ?
Passionate unles its a positive story about Ireland's relationship with the UK the Irish media and establisment aren't interested. This isn't the type of story those ********************ers who want Mrs Windsor to visit or rejoin the Commonwealth weirdos or the Lets support England bores want to hear. Truth be told the British don't pay much attention to us and therefore haven't got caught up with the 'maturity' of our relationship.
The fact that it just isn't true, as several seasoned travellers between the two countries by air and sea have already said on this thread, being secondary? As a republican and opponent of joining the Commonwealth who doesn't give a toss whether the Queen comes here or not, I merely point out that it simply doesn't bear any relation to reality for most of us who go over and back all the time...
Last year I travelled across the Serbian border on a bus full of gypsies with only old Croatian and Bosnian border stamps in my Irish passport, was a long few minutes with the cop.As for the UK,flew through Terminal 5 a few weeks ago from Schengen,10 min queue but fairly okay.Ironic to see that then UK Borders Agency employees checking passports there were almost all from immigrant backgrounds.
It is remarkable that there have been sixty six posts to date on this topic as people try to recall their (un?)eventful trips across the Irish/U/K/ border.....
There are two separate operations being discussed here Passport control/Immigration....
The only people who have any right/authority to examine passports are Immigration Officials/Border control employees in the U.K. As there is a CTA in operation for entry to the U.K. these officials do not engage in this activity for incoming passengers from Ireland.
For arrivals in Ireland from the U.K. the CTA also applies and Garda Immigration can only use
their normal Garda powers at the airports: seek name and address of person.
This state does NOT provide I.D. to its citizens so this term I.D. cannot be applied or sought. The Driving license csan only be examined/ seen by a Garda or other police officer when the person is in control of a motor vehicle. It is illegal to use this document or the passport for any other purpose.....opening bank accounts, buying telephones etc
The other operation is airline security and this has to be supported in every respect by all right minded people for all our sakes.
Yeah Gatwick was one of the original ones to do the photo thing. It's one of the most unfriendly airports I've been in. I think Birmingham might do it as well.

I've lived in London for the past four years, I've never been stopped to fill in a form or suffered any other form of 'harassment'! As others have said, security is a hell of a lot tighter when landing in Ireland.
On average about once a month I travel return from Knock, Dublin or Cork to either Heathrow, Stanstead or Luton (depending on where I have to go and times/fares) when I get into the UK i show my boarding card, whizzing past all other passengers travelling from other EU destinations who have to show their passports...when I get into Ireland I have to show my Irish passport.

Actually the only time in the four years travelling into the UK that I've been stopped is when I was a foot passenger travelling from France to Dover on the ferry...think they thought I was over for the day stocking up on cigarettes!

Both Gatwick and Heathrow require EVERYBODY to be photographed on going through security, that photo gets checked again as you're going to your boarding gate area to make sure that you're the same person that initially went through security. It has absolutely nothing to do with nationality as they don't look at your passport when they take the photos, everybody gets it done.
The UK airports have a seperate queue for arrival from Irish flights as there's open travel between the two countries, so that makes it easier and quicker for you to arrive as you don't have to queue to show your passport so I don't see why people complain about that - thats ignorance and deliberately looking for something to fuss about. This is for flights originating in ireland has nothing to do with the nationality of the traveller. A Nigerian coming off an Irish flight does not have to show a passport but an Irish person coming off a Nigerian flight will have to show a passport.
If you arrive in to Stansted late at night there's a chance you'll have to show your passport as they have minimum staff at that hour and don't man the domestic/Irish channel, everybody has to go through passport control proper.
The Aer Lingus area of Heathrow is I believe a throwback to the bad old days when they were scared that some Irish terrorist group or other would try to blow up Heathrow and that chances were it would be at the Irish area of the airport, so they deliberately made the Irish section quite seperate and cut off from the main body of the airport should the worst happen so that they could isolate and minimise the damage.
Why some infantile Irish people are still looking for imaginary ways that they are being picked on by the British in this day and age is beyond me. You just make yourself look really stupid.
