Tribunal lawyers net 1.1m on typo

I nearly choked on my cuppa when I read this.
And now, with coffee dripping from my nose I have to say, I have really had enough.
WTF!!!

THE TIMES
A typographical error by a government official in 2002 resulted in two barristers employed by the Moriarty tribunal earning an extra €1m over the past six years.

The “typo” seven years ago added €250 per day to the agreed €2,250 “per diem” fee paid to John Coughlan and Jerry Healy, the two highest-earning barristers in all the recent tribunals.
I am so sick of this.
Despite being spotted shortly after it occurred, the mistake was not corrected by the Department of Finance. After legal advice the higher payment of €2,500 was sanctioned, so Coughlan and Healy were paid a higher per diem than any barrister in any tribunal.
Did I miss something? Is profiting by defraud at the public's expense acceptable to the state? If not then why do our elected representatives sanction this?

GODDAMNIT MR BEALE I'M AS MAD AS HELL AND I'M NOT GONNA TAKE THIS ANY MORE!!!!!

I love the bit about letting them away with it due to legal advice....so they had to pay another brief more money to tell them whether they could get their money back......wonderful

I'm telling you...from the moment of the conception of tribunals (probably all drunk in Buswells) those guys are breaking their hearts laughing at us.

well there was one Boswells buddy who wasn't laughing last May. His Mahon golem them turned around to bite him in the ass.

The 1921 statutes that provide for the Tribunals in the Irish State need to be upgraded, they are profoundly flawed: a state inquiry into matters of urgent public concern should not take over a decade to conclude its investigations.

Permitting witnesses qualified privilege was bound to run into difficulties if you have those guilty of wrongdoing committing perjury to cover-up corruption in our nation's government. but what else do we have to bring these prodigal scoundrels and bag-men to book.

As I understand it, the two lawyers themselves had nothing to do with the typo or with the decision on legal advice not to seek the money back. Calling it fraud is libel...

As to the general griping about the Tribunals, see here : http://www.politics.ie/tribunals/454...ery-penny.html
